Please forgive me for being a chicken and commenting over hear, instead of over there. All my favorite people are over there right now, but the owner of that thread and I have some unpleasant history and I don’t want to risk reawakening any of it.
Pizza with the cops: cool. My younger two daughters, 18 and 21, have ZERO sympathy for any of the cops. Zero. Sympathy.
Says I, c ool cops need to stand up to uncool cops, call bulls**t on their coworkers when they see something going sideways. But to do so means being shunned, or worse. This code of honor they share, their impenetrable unions, their conditional immunity, these forms of power have corrupted the bulk of cop culture down to its kernel , IMO. If anything in this country is really going to change, policing wise, then the American police force must be riven, and bad cops either retrained or sent packing. And it’s going to take the good cops doing it.

Yep. That’s pretty much the conversation I had with this cop, minus getting into the union discussions. Reform needs to start from the top. No one is going to feel comfortable calling out bad coos if they don’t already have support.

Worrisome to me in this is what happens to the cops who are drummed out. Will they form some ugly militia or join militias already extant? Emotionally, I vacillate between genuine hope and genuine despair right now for my country.

The real bad ones are probably already in militias. The others are hopefully not too far gone, and being called out by their leers will inspire some introspection.

I have a hopeful enough disposition to hope and assume that the majority, if not the vast majority, of cops are not monsters. It’s the baked-in culture that turns them, IMO. I have a good friend at church who is CHP. He’s a very good man and a great church leader. The question I’d put to him would be how many times in his career he’s looked the other way. I personally think that the CHP is one of the most professional LEAs in the country. Being a public school educator is not so very different, given the power we have to ruin a kid’s day -- or life -- and the power and the privilege and the union who steps in and makes us largely untouchable. That kind of power corrupts at worst, and makes one lazy at best.
