BMW grilles, especially on sporty models, benefit from being blacked out. On this M440i , the grille switches from chrome on the base model to brushed nickel/gunmetal looking finish. But on the real version, not pictured above, there are these weird squares throughout the grille with the same metallic finish. It makes the grille too noticeable. So, I blacked out the squares. It still doesn’t look good, but just this small tweak is a huge improvement, imho.
Real version...

Agreed. Just blacking out the grill inserts does wonders for it. Still not great, but definitely an improvement.

The bigger issue here is that if it weren’t for the huge grilles, I would not be able to tell you that this wasn’t already the current model.

It's much easier to just buy something else, though.

The ‘58 Edsel looks positively restrained and elegant by todays standards, which is definetely something nobody ever expected to say.

Look at all those damn grille squares that need to be blacked out though!

These are the same car now, which is a mark against both of them.

Easy to tell them apart in side profile because the new one lost the Hofmeister kink and is now a Honda Civic Si.

Leave it to Harley Earl to be way ahead on trends.
GM’s legal team should investigate whether the two of them are violating the intellectual property of their Fashion-Aire Dynastar technology.

Better, but still bad. Don’t blame yourself, BMW has made a real mess of things...

I found a E46 M3 nose does a good job of fixing it.

Those big grilles are real? I thought it was a photoshopped joke at first poking fun at the ever-increasing grille sizes.
Oh my god they’re actually on the front page of the BMW Canada site.
I honestly thought it was a joke.

I figured out why this is screwing with me. The E46 part is obviously scaled way up to match the larger , but smaller-windowed M440i. The real E46 front is way smaller. I know where I’ve seen this Photoshop technique before...
