Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

I love The Police but I can’t stand listening to this song. Anytime Stewart is not allowed to be himself it’s not going to be all that great to listen to. I fully understand why it is written the way it is, but the warped take on songwriting just leaves me cold, and I have to question the thinking process of anyone that says that they like it.
The Police are best when Stewart goes full manic: https://youtu.be/nbXACcsTn84

Worst thing that happened to that band was when Sting’s ego took it over. That early stuff was brilliant, the band peaked with GITM, and Synchronicity was largely crap. Stewart Copeland wrote the best song on the album (IMO), and Andy Summers’ “Mother” always sounded like a plea to “get me the hell out of here,” the most anti-Sting bubblegum pop song he could force onto the album.

I tend to agree. I can listen to the middle albums over and over but Synchronicity is just too far away from the raucous energy and creativity I enjoyed in the earlier works. It reminds me of those pseudo intellectual pinheads on the staff of the high school literary magazine, trying too hard to impress whilst producing what is essentially mental masturbation.

Sting is almost as overrated as Bruce Springsteen.

Probably one of the top three influential bands for me.....
Contrasting the original demo version of ‘Every Little Thing...’ (1976?) with what ended up on ‘Ghost’ is pretty cool.

Not my favorite album, but Synchronicity II is up there among some of my favorite tunes.
The video was pure over-the-top 80's, too.
One of my favorite quotes by Copeland :
“Socially, over dinner we all got along pretty well. Still do to this day. The strange thing is, the three blonde heads, we really get along great... until somebody mentions music.”

Interesting to see that Copeland is using traditional grip on his sticks. Many, of not most, modern drummers use matched grip.
I had completely forgotten about that video. Of course, that was about the era where I stopped watching MTV. And yes, that is a good song. I should play that melody for my students and say, “See? That’s why I make your learn your arpeggios!”

Yup....I always thought it was odd because he can play the drums pretty hard, but after reading up on it, he insists the orthodox grip allows you to play with more power because you are using the thumb. Or something like that. My Dad played that way, so it was cool to see one of my favorite drummers hold the stick that way.
Cool side note: I know one of his sons, really great guy, and (not surprisingly) extremely talented. He plays guitar in a band, but can play almost anything. He was at my house once while on tour, and he was messing around on guitar....then he handed me back my guitar and got behind the drums and we jammed for a bit. Seems silly, because it wasn’t his dad, but still one of the cooler things to ever happen in my basement.

I’m not a drummer, but I think that players like that are also capable of more subtleties. As an old school analog musician, I like to see people do things in more traditional ways. Buddy Rich was one of the greatest drummers of all time, and that’s how he played. The guy was incredible.

My four-year old daughter somehow discovered Message In a Bottle , which caused me to revisit The Police. It’s surprising how well their music has held up.
Hell , Don’t Stand So Close To Me is unintendedly still relevant in this COVID-19 environment.
