THIS. I would love to have some loyalty to the Volvo brand, but the Volvo brand I love was dead before I was born

Everyone’s commenting with what FWD cars they want to make RWD, but you’re all forgetting about the instant “FWD to RWD” setting on your car :

They should have never stopped imo. Best damned car ever. I certainly wouldn’t kick a RWD Toyota out of my driveway either though

which is a curious concept... As a limited edition, could a car manufacturer build some more of the popular cars they built back in the day without all the efficiencies and safeties of today?
Could Acura Make some more integras real quick?
Could Volvo make some more 240s next weekend?
Could Chevy make some more of them Suburbans with barn doors?
If the answer is yes, I don’t want anything above. I want toyota GT2000 please. Like all of them at 60s prices... thank you
In America, the
2000GT sold
for about $6,800, much more than contemporary Porsches and Jaguars. As a “halo car” for
Toyota
, it is believed that no profit was made on the
2000GT
despite its high
price
.

I’m sorry, but no car of mine will ever have that specific implementation of said setting.
(well, maybe a classic Jeep someday will, but that’s not a “car”.)

My dad and I have always kicked that idea around - like what if Chevy made a brand new 1957 Bel Air? And I don’t mean some modern retro concept, I mean like dust off the old body bucks and start stamping out finned rear fenders. Granted, they could do some updating - LT1 engine with a 6 speed manual or 8/10 speed auto, some better insulation, make the windows from laminated safety glass, add shoulder belts, etc. It would get a little trickier if you wanted to add a padded dash air bags. Also, could you add crumple zones?
But could they do it? Would it sell? I think it’s a neat idea, for sure.

That’s why I bought a 1987 wagon. In fact I’m doing the paperwork right now to get it insured and registered. It’s the best little S wedish tractor.

I get what you are saying... but what I am saying is I am curious - if they made 0 changes to design. Just start making old stuff - they way they were. That way DOT cannot say its new and does not comply with new rules.
I would corner the market on some stuff. 60s GT2000. Maybe a delorian for kicks. Even the belair i’d take.
I get what you are saying - some updates would be nice, but that might be subject to new car rules.

My understanding is that the rules the car is subject to are based on the date of production, not the date of design. So I would imagine re-producing a car would require it to meet all current safety and emissions regulations. I could be wrong, but I would think if that weren’t the case manufacturers would be cashing in on our love of nostalgia.
There’s a company called Dynacorn that makes replacement unibodies and panels for the 65-70 Mustang f astback & c onvertible, 1st Gen Camaro & Firebird coupes and convertibles, 70 Chevelle coupe & convertible, 47 thru 57 GM pickups, and 1970 Challenger. They are all officially liscensed by Ford, GM, and Chrysler, respectively. I would think if the OEMs could, they’d buy these chassis and re-release them, but my understanding is if you build a car based on one it gets registered as a kit car.
Still, I agree, it would be cool to get a brand new 2000 GT.

The 1st-gen Tercel had a longitudinal FWD layout. Not sure how (or if) that’s relatable at all, I just think it’s a neat fact.

Its a 1987 DL with the 2.3 non-turbo and the 5 speed manual. Its a little rough but overall I think its condition justifies the $1500 I paid for it. So far the rust is contained to the rear wheel arches and in the cargo area below the rear floor, and a bit of surface rust on the hatch below the glass.
Its currently sitting at another Oppos house because it runs, but not well, and I’m scared it won’t make the 18 0 mile journey to my house on its own power, so in a couple weeks (once Im a bit more healed from my surgery) Im going to trailer it home.
I need to give it a good tune up, then fix the rust, and then the fun begins.

Ahh yes I remember you posting about going to look at it. For 1500$ who cares?
Did I already give you the advice about Volvo dealers being able to get a surprising # of parts for these at a reasonable price?
I understand being skeptical to drive it home, hopefully it’s just a simple tune-up and you’re on your way. Already being lowered is nice as well, I like my cars practical but these look even better with the wheel gap taken care of
![]() 06/05/2020 at 20:01 |
|
Yeah, we did chat about it and you did tell me the Volvo dealer can still get parts for these. It ran okay but when I drove it but (after I’d paid for it, of course) it made a “POP”, blew some smoke, and then ran slu gishly. Based on what I’ve read so far, its probably the flame trap clogged up, and blew out the cam seals.
I think the lowering is a bit janky, it rides like a cob. After the tune up and rust busting, I’ m going to redo the suspension bits, and I’d like to put it on the set of Propus wheels I have.
