Have you ever seen the movie PCU? In it, Jeremy Piven’s character is sitting around in a big room where his failing party is being protested by a group of “Womanysts” outside (Hey hey! Ho ho! This penis party has got to go!). Instead of hearing the chants as a protest, he tells everyone that they are instead crying out to party. “Please have a party! Feed us drinks!! AHAAAAAAAHH!!!”

Jeremy Piven’s character, Droz, is talking about our consumerist economy right now. There was no bubble that popped, no economic crisis in the US. This has been a health crisis, and we purposely turned off a big part of our economy to save lives and to “flatten the curve” so our health care system wasn’t overwhelmed.

But now the consumers are restless. They have money burning holes in their pockets and have been going INSANE from being in self-imposed quarantine. They are the “ Womanysts” in the movie who have been chanting “Stay home stay home stay home!”, but are now ready to rip their signs apart and go spend some damned money. Go on a trip. Go to brunch. Go buy some shit. Go to the gym. All as carefully as possible, but the consumerysts shall not be denied.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

It’ s the recovery I had imagined in my mind, and hoped for. That the unemploy ment was very much temporary in terms of displaced jobs. Most the people I know that lost their jobs and filed for benefits are already back to that job. It was less of traditional jobs issue and more a freezing of jobs. That being said a lot of jobs aren’t coming back so fast (or at all) so that stinks. But you are right. People getting their jobs back and going back to work is definitely a good thing.

Problem is we’re resigned to buying cheap Chinese shit off Amazon.

This is encouraging. Hopefully the moon doesn’t explode or something else ridiculous to cancel it out

Not for long, my friend! There is a movement called “Re-shoring”, which will be bringing much of the chinese manufacturing jobs back to North America. So instead of cheap Chinese shit, you’ll buy cheap American shit off Amazon.

Also, I’d say that consumers, ESPECIALLY Millennials and older Gen Zs, will be spending more money on services like travel, hospitality/leisure, and real estate agencies/home renovation than traditional physical goods.  I don’t have any sources for that, but it’s more of an educated hunch.

I dunno man, I’m pretty sure we’re stuck in a movie called ‘ 21 Dumb Days After Tomorrow ’ which is a mashup of the ‘21 Monkey s , The Day After Tomo rrow’ and ‘ Idocracy’ .

When not factoring the economy, I absolutely agree with you.

Can’t wait for the tropical storm next week!!

It’s very heartening. Some jobs will come back, but how many businesses have failed in the past few months that can’t bring their employees back?

Lip service. Americans are too expensive for the people that pay you. They’ll throw you some bones because you help them keep more of their money. They aren’t willing to do that for people that actually make things. I’ll be keeping as much of my money as possible within my circle. The vultures will still get some.

My employers tried giving me a pay cut, despite me covering their rent/internet/power bills over the last two months while also doing my job and watching my kids.

TBH, our economy can suck my dick. Anyone who needs a roof, water, food, hit me up, I’ll help you out.

When this started, I expected that about half the people laid off during the shutdowns would be called back to work fairly quick once the economy reopened, just surprised it started this quickly, since so much is still shut down in different parts of the country.

As long as there isn’t a second shutdown later in the year, we might be able to finish December at under 10%. Which isn’t great, but certainly not horrifying considering it peaked at over 20.
