So I am not a smart man....Or rather, I know a lot about some things but apparently can’t eat a chicken wing without chipping a tooth. I got it repaired today with the backer and filling and all that good stuff. But the color is noticeably different despite being tooth-colored and the seam where it was joined is super obvious. Is it still kinda weak right now? Does that eventually even out? I want to do some riding this weekend but I don’t want to accidentally damage it again and be out in the middle of nowhere, on a motorcycle, with a damaged tooth.

Chip tuning for your time....

Can’t answer....all three times I’ve had my lower front chipped tooth fixed, the ‘fix’ part has just broken off again...something, the dentist said, about there not really being a huge amount of area for the new piece to attach two and therefore the glue stuff doesn’t work as strongly on it, so I’ve just sortof given up and let it go short of paying an astronomical amount to get a cap or something put on it. My chip isn’t painful, it’s just visual.

Your tooth is as strong today as it’s ever going to be. I c an’t believe your dentist didn’t discuss this with you. I was told, “J ust don’t go biting trees or wrought iron”.

I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but the discrepancy in color is only going to get worse as your tooth will gradually yellow over time and the cap will stay the same. Unless that is, your cap is darker than your actual tooth . My advise is give it a week to see if you get more comfortable with it. If you’re still not happy, ask the dentist to re do it.

The way they repaired it is not ideal. Is it just a chip? Does it hurt without the filler in? I’ve had quite a few chipped teeth that aren’t deep enough to matter.

It sounds like a front tooth. You might want to look into some type of veneer for that one tooth, it’ll be a lot stronger.

Yeah, it’s a front tooth. I had pasta for dinner so I’m not pushing it, but I might give it a few days before straying too far from civilization. It didn’t hurt without the fill, but it was razor sharp and exposed some dentin, so it was more or less a matter of time.

He said it was strong and I could eat firm foods today and the tooth would be fine, but my jaw muscles might be a bit sore. I’ll give some more tough foods a try this weekend. Not that I don’t believe you, but breaking a tooth is a fear of mine so this has been an interesting few days....

I have broken sooo many teeth! Mostly snowboarding and luckily mostly in the back of my mouth. I have good ones and bad ones (as far as repairs) but they’re all pretty discolored . I went with veneers for the fronts after I knocked one out.

My biggest issue is re breaking the back theeth that have been repairs via candy.

If they did a composite filling, then it is a strong as it will ever be. That process should’ve worked along the lines of smoothing and shaping the remaining tooth, e tc hing the to be bonded area for adhesion, applying the filler as paste, UV curing and then shaping to fit.

I had my four upper front teeth as mostly composite for many years after a mishap involving a fall from a ladder and the concrete ground below. Normally the color can be matched almost perfectly and seem all but unnoticeable .  As for how durable they are, that will depend on the tooth and your bite.  For me, I broke off one my repaired front teeth about once a year, and then had them repaired.  Given my bite, the shearing force meant that I eventually had to have crowns done (last year).  They were impressively expensive, but are way better and much more durable.

I have terrible back teeth since the fillings were redone multiple times and THEN I had braces and an expander for 4 years. I was warned those teeth all need to be re-done in the next decade and it pretty much means crowns or implants on a number of teeth. I am debating getting a whole-mouth setup where all the teeth are removed and replaced with two solid pieces. My girlfriend has this for her whole upper mouth and she loves it.

I’ve had good luck with the few chipped teeth I’ve had fixed. Only one tooth broke again, and it was from a slap shot on the hockey rink that would have broken the original tooth regardless. The color discrepancy is mostly non-noticeable to folks, but I guess it would be apparent if you really went looking for it.

I broke a front tooth as a kid and broke the repair  at least 5 more times before I was a teenager. I’ve now had the same “temporary” fix for 20 years. No idea what made this one more durable.

I’d agree if I didn’t suddenly learn how to break everything besides my face in my mid-20s

Which tooth? My front middle, #9 I believe, was broken corner to corner 11 years ago. It was capped, root canaled, many a bleaching because the discoloration will happen no matter what. Had I know what I know now I'd have said to have them grind it to a nub and get a veneer. Best decision ever. Unfortunately had an apeco later on because the original root canal but another veneer, with slightly taller tooth, fixed discoloration. 1 tooth ~ 12 dentist visit. Have had experience.

Per this diagram, it was #10

Kinja'd!!!

They did grind down some of the tooth. I was in and out in about an hour. I think if I did a lot of work on these teeth, I’d bite the bullet and get a whole new set made while I still have the bone for it. My back teeth are hot garbage due to repeated fillings since I had a crap dentist who couldn’t do a filling to save his business...... Literally. He went out of business after he left his X-ray machine on while on vacation with his dental assistant mistress, it caught fire, and the fire department discovered he had been abusing prescription drugs while they were cleaning up the scene .

That was almost worth a Netflix documentary.

#10 as long as they can guarantee strength youre good on I wouldn't worry about cosmetics - if anything it's character being a secondary tooth. Strength wise mine was decades ago and held up great so strength wise I wouldn't worry - just be a little mindful. Did they hit it with the UV light? If so it's as hard as it possibly be a few seconds after that. My veneer was hit with UV *through* the veneer and was hard as could be seconds later. I trust it as much as my other teeth, maybe 97%.

I have thought about making that documentary.....

But the work was UV cured. Repeatedly. He applied a base sealant that was cured. Then he added some filler that was cured. Then he added some more stuff that was cured. He drilled for less than 5 minutes and spent the rest of the hour shaping and curing the repair.
