Hey, guys! Long time no see! What’s been up with you? Wow, that’s cool! Me? Not much, trying to get a business plan together for after the quarantine and asking questions. Speaking of that, I have a few questions for you!
Okay, so there’s cars with paddle shifters, right? That’s cool, I never drove one! Have you? You have? Awesome!
So, here’s the main question: W hat was the car, and what happened when you pulled both paddles?
You would think it would be the same for every car, but it’s not, and nobody has a comprehensive guide to the different things that can happen if you do. That sounds like a job for us Opponauts, and all you would need to do is to answer those last two questions! I mean, you could answer some of the other questions, but I'm just assuming that you've all been wrenching, taking care of yourself and your family and being awesome!

Car took a screenshot.
In actuality, nothing. They’re just linked to sensors attached to the ECU. No matter how hard you try to hit then at the same time, one will activate first and the car’s gonna ignore the other one.

I know on certain PDK Porsches it activates a clutch dump.

It dumps nitrous into the air intake , but you gotta be careful or your intake manifold will be in danger.

On the Aston Martin Vantage V12, it goes into Neutral.

I’ve owned three and driven several others. Some go to neutral, some activate whatever form of “race start”/clutch dump/line lock feature the car has or use the double-paddle-pull to dump the clutch when using that feature , and some do nothing at all.

That’s similar-ish to when I had my Veloster Turbo.
Because of the baked in lag between pulling in the paddle (button press really...) and the computer deciding whether to grant your request and then actually attempting to do so, it will then disengage the original request and then do the second paddle request. So depending on the RPM vs speed, vs which paddle you activated first vs delay between the two you get “ nothing” or you get second paddle.
I tended to use the “stick” when in “user select mode”.
I would’ve preferred a manual but wife had a say. She maybe drove the car 3 times in total so now I disregard her automatic preference. My Dodge Rampage is stick, and eventually the AMC Eagle will become a manual. When we pull our trailer with the Juke I’ll use the “manual” mode for a little transmission braking, but the CVT isn’t great at it.

The whole idea of that is just so dumb. Who wants to blow their expensive PDK doing a less fun version of clutch kicks? If you really want to drift and do clutch kick shenanigans then just buy the goddamn stickshift

612 Scaglietti - it went in to neutral. It’s how you get in to reverse if you don’t wanna use the little shift knob thingy.

I got one of those “drive x laps in y” as a gift. In the Lamborghini I drove, while at a stop, or from reverse , pulling both back puts it in neutral.

I can’t speak for all cars but with a Subaru CVT the vehicle actually becomes sentient and admits shame at attempting to pretend to have gears before threatening to destroy itself. Wait, maybe that was just a dream that I had.

It opens a rift in the fabric of space and time because it forces the computer to divide by zero. This may cause the car to mysteriously vanish and reappear somewhere/when else, leaving you behind. If you’re lucky, it will only reappear a few feet away from you. But more likely, it will reappear upside-down... Or above you... Or in a lake... Or in 1922... Or on top of Mount Everest... Or flying into the sun...

I would think it’s for launching the car, and I would hope that if it’s a built in feature (assuming it’s intended for dumping the clutch and not just being in neutral) it would be able to be used without damaging the vehicle
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

PDK actually just goes into neutral when you grab both paddles.
Some other cars activate launch control by pulling both paddles, usually after some other sequence of button-pushing.
Launch control /= clutch dump
Just wear your damn mask...

Depends on the car. I drove a Maserati years ago where pulling both levers engaged neutral.

I believe in the 991 GT3, holding both paddles in keeps it in neutral, and releasing them puts it back into gear.
In the PDK Porsche’s I’ve driven (981 S, 718, 991.2 911 S) , it actually puts the car in neutral. (regular and sport mode if I recall)
Also, depending on what mode you are in, you’ll probably get a different outcome.

On the Macan the PDK is “certified” to 3500+ dry launches. That means the hardest, turbo-spooled launch with launch control. You could do 1 launch everyday for almost 10 years and Porsche’s engineers would say it’s still fine to track the car. The 911/cayman/panamera have a lot less stress on the transmission as far as load goes so I’d think it would be at least that if not more. Pretty impressed. And I’ve done it in 3 different Porsche’s, it is quite an experience every single time.

When I first got one I somehow switched it out of automatic and I just had to drive it home shifting manually with the paddles. Probably a good idea to know what things do first haha, I could have done something else. I don’t actually know what it would do on my Acura, maybe I should look at it again.

It’s usually launch control, not a clutch dump at speed. Source: DD a C63 AMG with so-called “race start.”

Yup, 991 GT3. Pull both paddles, mash gas, release both paddles, happy national donut day!

With certain PDK cars , pulling both paddles , mashing the gas and releasing both paddles lets you do a glorious clutch dump. Launch control on GT3s is a different sequence IIRC.
