A photo of XB-70 number two (AV-2), taken from the back seat of a T-33 chase plane.

The Valkyrie was designed with adjustable wingtips that could be lowered to take advantage of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , where additional lift was generated by high-pressure air coming off the front of the airplane. On June 8, 1966, this XB-70 was involved in a famous !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that killed one of the Vakyrie pilots and the pilot of an accompanying aircraft.

I’ve always wanted to 4-wheel out to the crash spot north of Barstow.  It’s on BLM land and accessible.  Apparently, the eagle-eyed can still spot shards of titanium and stainless.

Adding this for now. I have to gif the wingtip droop sequence, as well as the main landing gear folding sequence, which is even wilder.

Had to speed it up to fit the 10 second limit and still didn’t get it all.

IMO, this is one of the coolest aircraft ever produced. It’s the stuff you’d dream of and have posters on your wall as a kid. It still looks awesome, and the engineering behind it was so advanced for its time. Arguably still advanced in some aspects even today.

I didn’t realize that the engineers completely redesigned the aircraft specifically to take advantage of compression lift. The engines were moved off pods on the wings and put in the “six pack,” and the large wedge-shaped air intake was designed to create more high pressure for the wings to collect. Cool stuff.

Yeah, it’s 30 seconds from doors open to full extension, or vice versa.

Here we go:

Quick note: each of the Valkyrie’s wingtips are the size of one the B-58's wing.

That thing was nuts, I still look at pictures and think it was just a movie.
