I ordered a step up adapter before and it hit the bumper so I had to get a straight 6" adapter and risk a little less ground clearance. But overall the hitch is pretty inconspicuous without the extension in, it seems to only sit about a quar ter inch below the exhaust. I haven’t lowered the car with my new wheels because I get pretty close to hitting the ground on a couple dirt roads I go down sometimes to surf, the parking areas are pretty lumpy too. When my truck is done I will probably use that on those days anyway. The hitch is for a support for my kayak though, I have always felt wagons are better for kayak transport because the roof is lower and it’s much easier to get a big kayak down, mine is a tandem and 17' long.

The creature, I mean doggo. We got out on some trails that were closed before this week, didn’t pass anyone yesterday. It’s been hot so we go at 6pm and finish  at 8 or so, perfect temperature then. Sylvie has discovered lizards, she wants to catch them all :

Lizards attract dogs, although I’ve never seen a dog catch one.

She is so fast I think she can catch bees, I have to pay attention.

My wife was giving treats to our dogs a nd she accidentally dropped one into the grass. The next morning, I spotted it during the morning walk. It was covered in fire ants.

I let both dogs investigate it. B oth got stung on the nose. That’s how they learned to avoid fire ants even if there’s a treat in the middle of the pile.

I was thinking about your k ayak support. Do you just use a tie-down on the front? We were talking about a buying a Hobie Adventure Island and I knew I would need something to support both ends. The hang gliding guys would use a ladder or would add a front receiver hitch to support the front of the glider when loaded. The keel can’t handle being supported by just a roof rack.

Not mine, but that’s a glider on an FJ with front and rear supports.

Oh yeah I plan to just tie it down with those straps you close the hood on. I won’t know how much I can shift the boat around until I try it out. I should be able to get the aft end of the boat sitting five feet back and then it should be ok resting on three supports. People put PVC rails to fit in the channels of the hull into. I made PVC rails for my boat dolly. So I may custom make some of these to go between the two rack bows on the car roof itself and just use the nerf pads for the aft and two tie downs from either side of the hood in front. My goal was to have something sturdy enough for a trip to Tahoe or Seattle. For my truck I was thinking about those ladder racks you can pull out. But that’s another project. I love the Tandem Island, it’s by far the best boat like this I’ve ever had, I sold my old one right after trying it out. I will see how the boat fits and modify anything.

I went down a rabbit hole looking at options for transport and came across a DIY version of those straps. They actually made theirs semi-permanent by losing the pipe, adding a grommet, and then screwing it down with one of the fender screws. The only problem they mentioned was losing paint on the edge of the hood from the strap rubbing. It was like this, but the implementation was a bit better:

Oh yeah I’ve seen that option. I was going to look for anything I could just throw a sling around, I’m a rigger so I have some equipment   I can mess around with. You could wrap some teflon tape around where the paint is. I haven’t checked it all out yet .
