As much as I love hatchbacks (and love my ‘05 Mazda 3s hatch), I’ve come to accept the fact that the sedan of this generation looks better.
See also: visibility matters.
Kind of r eminds me of an old TSX.

Having daily-driven my Camaro for almost a year now, I’d like to share a number about visibility.
Zero. As in, zero collisions, and zero visibility-related near-misses. The high beltline has actually made me better at autocross too because it hides nearby cones. You have to look up and ahead, and can’t target-fixate on cones that are too close.
The Mazda3 Turbo is on my shortlist for future cars to look at. Visibility will be fine.

You are wrong, so sit there in your wrongness and be wrong..... wrong doer!!

Haha. I drive by a hatch in Soul Red regularly. I’m not saying it’s ugly, and it certainly is bold...
![]() 06/03/2020 at 13:28 |

Yeah, it’s probably okay (especially with blind-spot monitoring standard).
And a back-up camera. =)
![]() 06/03/2020 at 13:28 |

I like the looks of the hatch but I’m not sure about the visibility.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 13:29 |

As someone who harps on visibility, to me it’s not just about not crashing, I like an open airy-feeling experience while driving a car. Being ensconced in a cocoon with small windows and lots of opaque surfaces is not a comfortable situation for me.

Standard blind-spot monitoring and back-camera helps.

OMG YES. I just saw this!!! omg omg omg
But the sedan should get it too yeah

Dude, you’d better call your local dealer and get on the list with that reaction!

With the big PP Turbo, I’d argue the Mazda 3 should be worth considering if one’s thinking of a Merc A class or Audi A3 or BMW 2 series. That interior is luxury-car level good.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 13:36 |

They’re definitely knocking at the door with premium leather and materials and extra tech in the highest trims.

Haha, I’m mainly relieved I have something to replace my GTI with in a few years. I was low-key panicking about the possibilities because I don’t care for the Mk8 Golf, and don’t really want something that isn’t a (hot) hatch which eliminates just about everything else (Veloster/Elantra are too low-rent inside) . Plus something that has a decent reliability record so I don’t have to worry about running it for 150k miles would be nice . This is the clear solution to those dile mmas

You do know about the GR Corolla, right?
That one’s on my watch list!
![]() 06/03/2020 at 13:55 |

That’s true, but Toyotas have terrible seating positions for me and the new Corolla is no different unfortunately. Plus the 3 has that pretty exterior and stunning interior
![]() 06/03/2020 at 13:56 |

Those help not run into things but they don’t get any more light into the cabin.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 14:01 |

Haven’t driven one, but hopefully that’s not an issue for me. Because manual.
We were a 2 Mazda family once. I’ll surely own another some day.

I still think the hatch looks better. However, as you correctly pointed out “visibility matters.”
Pretty as it is, I would never buy a hatch for that reason.

^^^^ so much this.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 14:09 |

Yeah I think the GR ‘rolla is going to be MT only since it looks like they’re using the GR yaris’ drivetrain which appears to only have a stick.
So, nice car available with either transmission, just not the SAME nice car.

Sure you could probably parallel park fine in a car where you know what you can't see but the mental security of seeing something is worth quite a lot.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 14:13 |

Yeah I had a 350z for a long time and never crashed it either due to the blind spots...
Just kidding, I ran into a dudes pristine ZHP 330i when I was trying to back out of a steep , crowded, driveway once at night, and managed to merge into a lady at 4am when boarding a ferry boat. Both accidents were at like 3 mph but both were most definitely caused by the blind spot (along with some sleepiness and unfamiliarity with the car)
![]() 06/03/2020 at 14:15 |

Options are good! Hope they sell a lot of both.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 14:21 |

Yeah, the GR is going full on hot-hatch, so I’d expect a manual, while Mazda is going for more of a cut-price A3 approach

Have you tried a forester
I feel like I’m in an aquarium with all that glass in my 2017
![]() 06/03/2020 at 14:39 |

i’ve noticed that seating position thing too... even in larger Toyotas. But my mother loves it because she is 5'5"...
![]() 06/03/2020 at 16:32 |

I’m curious to see what the price will be. With Mazda’s push upmarket, I hope they don’t price themselves out of the GTI/R/N/Type R market.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 16:38 |
|
You can only get the CX-5 with that engine in GT trim, and that starts at $35k. I assume they’ll follow this pricing structure, and maybe it will start a few grand less than that. So, less than Type R, but more than a GTI/
WRX.

Foresters are awesome in that regard. Anyone who says people are unjustified in buying them and that they’re no better than a RAV4 is mistaken.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 17:15 |

It’s similar to my 2010 sx4 I had from 2010 to 2015. Just bigger.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 18:00 |

They’d have to bump up from the 250ish HP the CX puts out, that’s for sure.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 18:10 |

It’s a torque-ier engine.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 20:01 |
|
But torque steer. Ew.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 23:15 |
|
The most important thing to remember is that the Mazda 3 is one of the cheapest cars that can be spec’d with a red interior and red exterior at the same time.
Now with a turbo to go with AWD? It’s my next car.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 23:23 |

Red over red?
![]() 06/03/2020 at 23:26 |

I test drove the hatch. The back seats are very cavern-like but quite comfortable. The visibility is actually pretty good for how it looks on the outside, better than a Veloster. I drive a 19 Impreza so I thought I’d hate the new 3 but I was pleasantly surprised.
![]() 06/03/2020 at 23:32 |
|
You know it. I’d get every one of my cars in that combo if I could.
![]() 06/04/2020 at 00:25 |
|
“Better than a Veloster” is...faint praise.
![]() 06/04/2020 at 08:40 |

Turbo is an AWD only option, torque steer isn’t an issue like the FWD Speed3, unfortunately.
![]() 06/04/2020 at 09:14 |

Just looked at the Mazda 3's interior - that’s a nice, deep red (and not too much - just right). And their Soul Red is awesome.
![]() 06/04/2020 at 09:39 |
|
It was probably just perception on my part. Expecting the Veloster to be more airy than it was and expecting the 3 to be darker inside than it was. Since for you, it’s less about blind spots and more about an airy cabin you probably won’t care for it
![]() 06/04/2020 at 17:07 |
|
Wait, do front biased AWD systems not have torque steer?
![]() 06/05/2020 at 06:58 |

From my experience with driving a turbo CX5 and CX9, they did a pretty good job of tuning it out. Even the second gen speed3 was much reduced from the first gen.
