Always thought this was the best realization of Bangle’s design concepts at BMW.
A lot of what he says about
the driving experience
in this car is similar
to why I may never part with
my E90 M3.
What would you have: one of these, an E46 M3, or an S54 ‘Shoe?

I would have a Z4M. It just looks perfect to me and it arguably has the best mechanicals

My previous boss had one (a roadster), and I’ve had the pleasure of tearing around the Ozarks a few times in it. Great car.

Are the roadsters and coupe different mechanically? I’ve always like the coupe more but they are way more experience than the convertible.

Between this and the shoe, man that’s tough. The M Coupe is a very unique shape, and while the Z4M is really cool (I would take one in a heartbeat), I’d probably go with the M Coupe.
Of course, that’s without me being in a Z4M, thoughts may change if I drove em back to back for comparison.

Same mechanically - looks like the roadster’s a bit lighter, so they didn’t need to add any additional bracing.

Maybe when my Vette is paid off I could look at getting a Z4M roadster. I’ve never owned a convertible and what better to own than one with a screaming I6 with ITBs

I love the uniqueness of the ‘Shoe, but the interior is so clearly a generation before, I may have to go with the later car.

Having been lucky enough to drive multiple iterations of all of them Z4M coupe. It’s not the prettiest, but it is the tightest. A fter it, I prefer the clown shoe coupe then convertible, followed by the Z4 ragtop . All 4 are absolutely fantastic though! even the S52 variants are plenty fun.
Little personal factoid, t here is a road nearby that most petrolheads have had at least one incident regardless of age. I’m sure every zip code has an area like this, however there have been A LOT of bimmer wrecks on my local spirited driving roads . Here is just my personal history having never owned an Z3/Z4:
I slid off the road in friends a z3 m coupe (S52), two new tires, wheel repair, new rear exhaust section.
W as co pilot in a bad wreck (bad for the car, we were fine) in a Z3 M roadster (S54). My friend, his fathers car. Totaled
The above Z3M roadster was replaced by a Z4M roadster which was also wrecked on a different part of the same road by another friend...Totaled
All of that was at least a decade ago, but...
Just last week a friend lost it in his fathers z3 m roadster (S54) very slight damage, but his dad bought that car new in 2002...and BOY IS HE PISSED! My friend/his son is my age (35) but it’s as bad as if it happened when we were in high school haha
The road(s) go through a bunch of local horse farms, lots of sharp uphill blind turns. The type of turns where a few mph difference means your wheels have left the road... which is how all of the above wrecks happened.

A true analog sportscar.
The roadsters can be had for significantly less than the coupes.

The Z4M is probably the better car but the clownshoe is too iconic , it’s always been a dream car for me. Also the interior of the Z4 does nothing for me - I don’t like the styling one bit, those gauges remind me of a Mustang. The Z3 is much more “classic BMW” to me.
So to bridge the best of both worlds an S54 Z3M would be the ideal car for me, but sigh how expensive they are. Maybe someday as a classic to baby if I get rich by the time I’m old.

I’ve always hated the front (i nsert new 4 series joke here), but I love the way the roof slopes down and the rear view in general.

Could the problem be 2 door BMWs?

The same (similar, really)
line that works so well on this car makes the 1M look like a pot-bellied pig.

Haha no, you could legitimately find yourself a wrx fog light there for a while, or at least bits and pieces of one. It’s just an area with a high concentration of enthusiasts. There is a pretty well known concours d’elegance at the farm nearest my neighborhood , C&C is nearby, local BMW and Porsche ccas are headquartered here, bunch of high end dealers/indes and whatnot.
In addition to the dangerous curves, there are a lot of animals (racoons, foxes, deer...) obviously worse at night.
The roads are actually great for vehicles without enough power to get you into trouble. eg., vintage whips, slow motorcycles, miatas. There is also a bird sanctuary /llama farm along the way!

+1 for the old gauges. That interior gives me the same reaction as when my wife asks me if I want to do something that I hate doing but bakes in a reward at the end. Couldn’t find the right gif.

I would take the E46, then the Z4, then the shoe. Would be so happy with any of them, though!

Agreed. Personally, I think the Z4 has one of the sexiest rear ends ever,
combined with one of the ugliest front ends i’ve ever seen. The Z3 Coupe/M Coupe is just ugly all around. But at least it
knows
its ugly and has gone full “purposeful” as a result. I find the M-coupe’s looks to be charming in an ugly duckling kinda way. I love how the rear end absolutely refuses to slope in a
traditional sports car fashion
. Nope, its like their designers suddenly decided that interior carrying capacity was more important than looks on a strict 2 seater. Bonkers, but also hilarious and fun.

Exactly. Would never call it a beautiful car, but that clownshoe is so unapologetic that you gotta love it. At least I do, but can understand those who find it too offensive to look at.
