The Home Depot > Lowe’s.

A search for screws at Home Depot:

Kinja'd!!!

The same search at Lowe’s

Kinja'd!!!

I think Lowe’s needs to hire a new website management team.

there’s nothing more infuriating then knowing exactly which keywords are required to find exactly what you’re looking for and being forced to sift through pages of bullshit  to find it.

Agree. Found that out when I was remodeling my bathroom. The only way to search Lowe’s with any success isuccess through Google

Lowes is for people who pretend to DIY for social media

As someone who used to work for lowes: they are a shit tier company at best. Fixing the website would cost money. Everyone knows, you cant any money at all on fixing anything at your store. That would be madness.

Their POS  systems still run on a dos framework. Html is way to complex for them.

I prefer Lowes to Home Depot when it comes to organization and layout. It’s easier for me to find stuff in the store. Perhaps that’s just familiarity, but I shopped at the big orange box before I shopped at the big blue box.

The computer science department where I used to work taught some obscure programming language that’s only still in use at certain utility companies. They were teaching it because they wer e the only place still teaching it and some of the utility companies ke pt giving th e university money since it was the only place they could find programmers who could keep their systems running.

As I have come to learn the hard way in recent weeks, Home Depot’s website is great, but they’re inventory control is garbage. I’ve gotten screwed twice by their curbside pickup, and there will not be a third. I’m sticking with my local Ace, and if I need something they don’t have, I’ll go to Menards.

The Lowe’s website requires using their menus or starting with simple searches. I searched for “trim screw” and it took me to the right place. It gave me buttons to click for different sizes and then gave a good list.

I used to like Home Depot better. However, the management practices changed a number of years ago. The company focused so much on cost cutting that they stopped paying floor staff well. Turnover has become high and I have trouble finding anybody in a store who knows much about the products or even where to find them in the store.

At least at my local Lowe’s, I can find people who will either answer my questions or help me find another store employee who can.

One thing I miss about living in St. Louis was being able to go to Branneky True Value Hardware in Bridgeton. It was a small store, but they had everything. They may have had only a few of each item, but it was al ways in stock. Everybody in the store was knowledgeable about the products and how to use them. I found the store when I got my first dog. My wife wanted to line the doghouse with hay, and  Brenneky was the closest place that carried hay. When I told them I wanted a bale, they asked me what type of hay I wanted as they had three different kinds. They quickly pointed me to the right type for a dog house and I learned the value of a good neighborhood store.

mcmaster has a better website. At least at my local lowes the staff are humans. I dread if I have to run into HD, its like they intentionally hate their customers.

They should adopt the Kinja comment system to complement their user experience .

T he local Ace people are a bunch of a-holes. I’ve been in there multiple times and only found useful assistance once. The guy in the small engines section actually told me that he didn’t have time to help me identify the parts I needed despite me having the parts in my hand. Fine. I went home and found it on Amazon.

We do have plenty of local lumber places around, but they cater to the commercial side and aren’t open on weekends. That leaves Ace, Lowe’s, and Home Depot as the only places where I can get lumber, etc. on the weekends.

W e have an excellent local place for getting farm related items like hay. We usually buy our pest control items from them.

With all the comments coming in, I’m realizing how different the same big box stores can be. My local Lowe’s has better staff than Home Depot, but I can see many instances where the opposite is true.

Menard’s with the most ear-worm-friendly jingle. I haven’t listened to local radio in years, but as soon as I see that name...boom, there it is.

Last week I was at HD and some guy in lumber was angrily telling a coworker “I do n’ t give a fuck!” l oudly, about some issue he was having.

We used to have Orchard Supply Hardware until Lowe’s bought them and closed them down.  Now we’re getting “Outdoor Supply Hardware” which looks suspiciously familiar...like some old OSH folks are doing their own reboot...

I always forget about McMaster Carr. But I just ordered header collector bolts from them and grabbed a couple other bolts I  needed for other projects.  Had them next day.  And their piece prices are excellent vs local hardware options.  Shipping isn’t cheap, but if it’s a big order, it’s worth it.

Lowe’s, Depot and Ace are all dependent on the location. We had a Lowe’s by our old house that was excellent service. Our local ace is great service, but more expensive. Depot has my Milwaukee tools, but I normally get those online when I get their sale email. They all have their time and place, but the Ace is less than a mile from my house now, so I’ll start there first if I think they have what I am looking for.

Oh yeah, and Menards is good for certain items too.  I just bought my yearly supply of brake cleaner (3-dozen cans) this past week.  Trans rebuild sapped my stockpile.

HDs site is better to search. Every project I done is if Lowes doesnt have it, Home Depot does. Over here they are friendly, but all the small wood and moulding is so warped. Lowes is ok, employees run away from everyone , although I know more than them :)

I have yet to find a hardware retailer with a website I like.

Lowe’s is better for design and finishing items, HD is better if you need obscure plumbing and electrical rough-in parts. Most of the time if I’m doing plumbing work, Lowe’s won’t have the parts I need or be more expensive. OTOH, Home Depot’s selection of things like cabinets is awful, and their Behr brand paint has turned into garbage.

This is all such a big discussion. We have two Ace TV stores in my town and they’re both quite good. One is large and shiny and the other, like 5 00 yards from my front door, is dimly lit and kind of grungy and I buy things there whenever I can. Both have helpful, friendly people.

The Despot I’ve taken to ordering online and picking up there. I have to be informed and self-advocating when I shop there. If I adopt the right attitude, I do alright.

In the main, I almost never ask my wife to go to the store for me because some jackass is liable to give her the wrong information and cause her to waste her trip.

Yeah. And I am in despair about my country right now.

We used McMaster at my last job quite often for stuff. A lot of the equipment or very specific application bits can be found better quality and/or   cheaper elsewhere. BUT their search filters are pretty amazing and often fill in some blanks that you may be missing for finding stuff. And they can ship FAST. Order in the afternoon in Calgary and have it the next day by lunch.

I ordered the wrong length bolts, called them maybe 1/2 hour later and the order had already been packed . ussually if i order by 5:30 i can get it next day. I once ordered @ 6:45 as i didn’t want to forget and it still showed up the n e xt day at 11.
