Senseless. Both the act that caused the riots, and the riots themselves.

I want to understand the logic behind riots. What are your accomplishing by destroying someone else’s property or looting?
I get wanting to protest, and I certainly understand the anger of the situation. I just don't get violence. What will it really solve?

This is tragic and getting serious for sure.
I’m currently on the phone with the Minneapolis branch of my work and we’re working on moving operations out to their DR location in the suburbs.

Holy shit.... Portland still has Rite Aid?

They’ve tried kneeling and marching. Guess what happened? nothing. People are mad, and they are right to be . When they’re mad they lash out.

Ask the cops who caused and perpetrate this violence. Both “indirectly” by murdering and oppressing the people they are sworn to protect and directly with everything from undercover riot-starters within peaceful protests to overzealous use of dangerous and damage causing “crowd control” munitions. Rubber bullets break windows and tear gas canisters start fires all the time.
As do panicking crowds when their peaceful protests are met with state violence. Is property violence worse than violence against human life? It’s not.
Every drop of blood and shard of glass is on the hands of the oppressive and racists cops and polices of this failed state we call america. Don’t blame the oppressed for being oppressed, blame the oppressors!

I want to understand the logic behind trying to understand the logic behind riots.
We riot when our favorite team wins the last sportsball game. Suddenly people riot for an understandable reason and everyone’s like “there is no logic behind what these people are doing!”

This.

I meant that to be I think all riots are dumb. At least with this there's a reason for anger. Rioting because your team won? That's just moronic

Apparently those anarchist scooters came in handy for bashing out windows.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 13:35 |

In most of the cases its just the “herd immunity ” : Everybody is out and angry at the authority and the cops are overwhelmed so lets break and burn things like on videogames or on the TV to have fun or because “it’s t he only way to be heard ” and because attacking banks and shops in a nice neighborhood that are representing “the system” will not hurt anybody (“they are insured ”) .
You now have your own gilets jaunes, at least yours are all protesting for the same cause .

At least the tourist trap/Voodoo Donuts is OK.

Those who make a peaceful revolution impossible make a violent revolution inevitable
Look at the way Dylann Roof and other white shooters were treated by cops vs the way innocent black people have been treated. There is an image like that comparing them, but I can’
t find it right now. It will
probably show up on your social media feeds, though.

My favorite Genesis album.
Really it stands for “all cops are bastards”. 1312 is the numeric representation of the same thing, corresponding to those letters’ placement in the alphabet.

Portland is going to have a huge spike in COVID-19 cases in the next couple of weeks, if these protests were anything like the ones in Minneapolis, I’ll bet hardly anyone followed proper social distancing during it.

You have to think about what it’s like to be a member of a particular community that’s been discriminated against for generations, still faces inequality in many/all aspects of society, and rightly fears that at the very least cops are not going to treat them fairly and at the worst might kill them.
Now think about all that and add an event like George Floyd’s death. The reaction is not going to be peaceful and rational. Rioting is not a logical, carefully-considered attempt to solve problems. It’s an expression of primal, pent up anger at that big-picture oppression punctuated by a specific instigating event.
This is not to justify the behavior, but you have to acknowledge that this shit happens for a reason.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 14:54 |

I think that annoying comfortable people is a way of making them think about the discomfort others feel. Hey, they broke the glass of your restaurant? That’s really shitty, but think how shitty it is that living as someone in a minority group is really hard, or even lethal,
in many countries.
When the feminists rioted in Mexico City last year
they filled Reforma Avenue, the most expensive avenue in the city, with graffitti, and they also destroyed a police station. Reforma is the financial center of Mexico, and every time the people that work at the corporations there see the Angel of Independence covered in graffiti
(the plaque has “Mexico feminicida” written on it) they’re made uncomfortable, and they think about this stuff. Ultimately, I don’t know if it’s the best way to find change, but they’ve gotten people thinking about it. To the point that when women called for a general strike around
three
months ago all of the banking corporations announced they’d be no consequences for not showing up to work for female employees
. I guess it’s mostly PR, but they’re giving in rather than fighting it out. Which is part of the change in and of itself.

In poor areas, police largely focus on protecting property rather than protecting people. If you can overwhelm them and destroy property, then everyone can see the emperor has no clothes.

Yeah I’ve read articles discussing this. Evidently other organizations want to butt in on the oppression of people of color now that white people are losing their monopoly on it.

Not true at all
.
Pretty well documented that
Portland
(as well as other cities
)
has a long history of people(criminals/anarchists) taking advantage of otherwise peaceful protests/marches
. Doesn’t matter the cause.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 20:13 |

not true “at all?”
Not everything is black and white (no pun intended). The world exists in shades of grey. Of course the people who are there just to fuck shit up are deplorable and can get fucked, but to completely and unilaterally dismiss it as an effective means of getting people to listen , causes many of the pro blems that we face this day in age.
Look at every revolution in the history of the world. Rioting and unrest have been at the epicenter of every single one of them. Does it suck that now, in 2020, it’s still a necessary part of the process? Of course! But that’s the bed we’ve made, and now we have to sleep in it.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 20:46 |

While that may be true.....
F ighting generations of atrocities is more pe rtinent than the eliminating the chance of people who have an almos t infinitesimal chance of dying from a virus. People in their 80s aren’t out there marching.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 20:47 |
|
So is Minneapolis (I live here). Honestly it has seemed to create an even greater divide between whites and POC because whites have power in numbers.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 20:47 |
|
The people that are marching will give it to their family members, or give it to someone else who gives it to a family member, that’s the whole damn point of social distancing. More than 90% of the population isn’t at any real risk from the virus, but we have to lock down and isolate to keep us from spreading it to the other 10%.
Mass protests and riots shouldn’t be allowed until an area is is phase 3 of reopening, at least, and even then, only with face masks and 6ft distancing.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 20:54 |
|
“Mass protests and riots shouldn’t be allowed”
Are you under the assumption that the powers that be are
*
allowing*
these demonstrations?
I’m not trying to be rude, and I agree, under ideal situations, keeping people distanced is extremely important. But when a genuine opportunity to change this country for the better presents itself, you have to take it.

I do always wonder about this storyline in times of civil unrest—- It’s always reputed to be “professional troublemakers from out of the area”. If that’s true, it doesn’t seem like it would be hard to track, would it? Especially with no planes flying. Who’s buying those Megabus tickets?
