It’s a hot rod as far as mainstream hybrids go- 302 combined horsepower and hits 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.

But, starts at $38,100, not including $1,120 in destination and delivery charges

*and this pricing is before you add the packages

I still think people won’t adopt hybrids and electric as mainstream until the prices can get cheaper. The tech has been around long enough they SHOULD be cheaper in my opinion, but a lot of people kindof still think of them as a like....luxury good....sortof?

Won’t this qualify for the federal tax credit? Low 30k for this is a steal I feel.

Petty much this. Hybrid should have been a stepping stone while full electric developed but the electric tech is here. Makes me wonder my hydrogen is an option still too.

Good point. I only looked at the press release table . Here’s a cost comparison with the regular hybrid using the federal credit

“Considering only the federal tax credit, the RAV4 Prime XSE adds up to $35,045. The 2020 RAV4 Hybrid XSE, which we call the best hybrid for the U.S. market—starts at $35,420. And this is all before the inflation of a model year catches up with the RAV4 Hybrid’s sticker price.”

To be fair, there probably aren’t many options left to throw on this thing once it hits this trim.

That puts it at $47,000. An RDX Advance SH-AWD is $47,900. I like the looks of the current gen Rav, but for that money if I’m buying a new hot  crossover, I’m going with the RDX.

Its not apples to apples, though. I looked long and hard at a Prius prime before I got the leaf, just couldn't make the money work to what I wanted (could have if I was willing to deal with more miles on a used prime). Nearly all of my driving, outside of my commute, is within it's electrical range. 99% of my wife's driving is within it's electrical range. This is essentially an electric suv with a battery backup for nearly all of my driving. Acura ain't giving me that.

That’s fair. My commute, for now, falls within its electrical range, but a lot of my other driving doesn’t, and once the job market stabilizes (stop laughing!) I plan to look elsewhere again, and most of the jobs I’m interested in are 20+ miles way. Most of my friends live that far away as well.

It’s all a moot point for me anyway, as I’m not looking to buy for at least two more years.

O ur neighbors across the street got a “normal” hybrid one of those a few months ago. It’s rental car white and nothing fancy - but it does make Star Trek shuttle noises in electric mode.

The new Prime could go either way - ignored like the old V6 Accord hybrid or could be super popular for upper middle class urban dwellers...

We love our pilot, and wouldn't switch, I think. But this would essentially be all electric for us except for when we drive to my mother in law's. The pilot uses 4-5 gallons each way for that trip. Call it 3-4 in this thing. We'd get gas a couple times a year, maybe.

It seems like a pretty compelling package next to the Chevy Volt from 10 years ago

30+ miles EV range

300 hp, 0-60 sub 6 seconds

AWD

5 seat, tall w agon

Seems like a pretty good value

That does sound intriguing, and if I ended up staying local for work I’d be in a similar boat. Now that the weather’s nice and I have the Aristo running again I’ve been using it more for extracurricular driving, while the TL has mainly been relegated to going back and forth to work and maybe the grocery store or something on the way back. It probably gets about the same mileage as your Pilot since they have derivatives of the same drivetrain. I like my TL, but I’d like to be able to carry a bike more  easily. The crossover ride height would be an adjustment, but my stepmom has a last-gen Escape that I use to could get a feel for it.

I’m happy after switching from a small SUV to my wagon, it’s just much better to drive. The A Spec RDX looks cool and some of the paint is pretty though. I’d take a wagon version of one of their new sedans any day though.

I would too, but I can’t see that happening anytime soon. The TSX wagon debuted here in 2011, but in other markets it was already around since the generation came out. Unfortunately, as few were sold, which wasn’t entirely due to lack of interest, I can’t see them trying again unless wagons suddenly become a hot segment in the US. The RDX, on the other hand, will be a relatively easy find in the package I want (AWD, Tech/Advance or A-Spec) in a few years.

After the $7500 tax credit, $30,600 seems like a no brainer for something with the usability of a Rav4 and 42 miles pure electric range. My only concern is trunk space with the larger battery pack but I’ll probably forgive it because it comes in bright red.
