So, my wife’s little door escapade came in at $1300. At least, that’s the first quoted amount. A little...high.. in my opinion.
I’ll take it somewhere else and see. Maybe I can use some insurance wizardry to lessen the quote, but I am not submitting a claim for this. It would be her second at fault claim within this policy term and upon renewal we’d have to sign away our first born child.
Unfortunately, her first claim was driving a fleet vehicle for her employer. It used to be that insurance followed the car NOT the driver (so, if I crashed your car, YOUR insurance would go up, not mine) but they fixed that bit of fuckiness prior to her crash so she’s stuck with it. Wrote it off though, so at least it was worth it, her employer replaced it with a much better car.
It sucks because the car is so clean otherwise.

$1300 is about right if they plan to replace the outer skin on the door
Of course the better option is to stickerbomb the heck out of that door...

It will have to get done at some point, but ugh. I hate spending money on stuff like this, but I hate having rough looking cars more.

It’s not that bad, as long as nothing was broken and the door still opens and closes and everything works
Just get a can of spray paint :o)

Yeah, if you cannot stand having shoddy bodywork, its $$ to maintain them to be clean...

Just make her get a part time job to pay for it. Th at’s what my parents did with me 16 years ago! and 15 years ago. and 13 years ago.
Also, if I wake up and my drivers door is missing, I know who to look for......

She has *checks notes* 3 jobs lol. 1 full time and two part time. She’s a very busy person!
It is what it is, but it just sucks.

I feel ya. I have a 4 inch vertical scratch where a coffee mug fell off my GTI ’s roof (it was stationary , I don’t know either ). It’s on my drivers side rear door, and makes my skin crawl every time I approach the car. Sadly, it’s not severe enough for me to want to pay a $500 deductible, so it stays for now.

Gas station bollard?
I hit one of those when I got in a hurry and tried to back away from a pump and make space for someone else. It was on the driver’s side. The bollard was too low to see either out the window or in the driver’s side mirror.

Same scenario, but the bollard was in the parking garage of her newest job.

$1300 Canada bucks sounds reasonable. Bodywork is expensive...

My parents have done this to both their cars (one each, both on the passenger side). They’ve left it on both cars, though I think my dad’s XC70 is probably worth enough to be worth fixing. Apparently gas stations are dangerous places...

Where’s the quote from? I’ve had wild variances in the past from different
. Also assuming you told them up front it was OOP? Sometimes that changes the perspective on body shops used to getting
the insurance check rate.

How much for a used door?

“Wrote it off though, so at least it was worth it, her employer replaced it with a much better car.” What car is better than a Golf?

Nah, this is our personal car. She wrote off a fleet 2011 Ford Escape and they replaced it with a brand new 2020 Escape. She shares that car with her co-workers and they all are happier in the new car.

I watched a guy in a lifted Tacoma hit one. It was protecting the air compressor. He was fortunate that the side step caught it before it hit any bodywork.
My great-grandparents had bollards at the end of their driveway. They were there to mark either side and keep people from dropping into the ditch. My grandparents knew it was time to take the keys when both sides of great-grandpa’s car were smashed in by the bollards.

If that were my car, I’d buy a can of polishing compound to get the other guy’s paint off and then pretend nothing had ever happened.

I've tried. It's not the poles paint, it's lack of our paint. Also a big ass dent

I don’t think that price is outrageous to fully dismantle the door (probably
off the car), bring the dent back out, work out the crease,
repaint the whole door, re-hang it (probably), and put everything back together.

Okay, then upgrade to rubbing compound. If everything works, wear it as a badge of honor and drive on.

Yeah its gotta be the same door as any golf worldwide I'd think. Gotta be easy to find one in the same color on the cheap and then just bolt it in while in a parking lot someplace.
