I like how Larson thought to draw the detective’s hand on the old woman’s shoulder. It’s a nice human touch in an otherwise bizarre yet darkly funny comic.

It takes a Larsonesque mind to take what was the current vogue of “plants have emotions! talk to them!” and the phrase “hanging plant” and get... here, by combining the two.

Dark. Terrible. Hilarious.

Are you sure he’s a detective? It looks more like he’s wearing a bathrobe.... and a hat. Maybe he rushed right over without bothering to put on clothes.

Quite. It’s the details that make this, also including the plant having not jumped off a chair, but kicked its plant stand out from under itself. Aside from that, I bet in another 20 years when almost nobody remembers the “talk to your plants because they have feelings” hippie fad, that this strip will be even more unsettling, the joke being more inscrutably twisted.
