Artists seem to have a hell of time with simple mechanical devices. When I see a bicycle on a poster, I immediately review it for correctness. I had high hopes when I first saw this one:

Kinja'd!!!

Then I realized that the drivetrain is completely wrong. Very few bikes had a left-side drive. The right crank is missing. The rear sprocket is outside  the frame. I’ve come to the conclusion that most artists are trying to draw bicycles from memory and their memory isn’t very good.

I’ve heard of abstract perspective, but that’s just silly.

I initially thought “Close enough to convey “airplane” but to not require licensing.” but it’s clearly from way before that was an issue.

So, why do most bikes have right side drive? Tradition?

Fokker F.VII maybe?

Kinja'd!!!

Not a perfect match but clearly there’s some “artistic” license going on here...

And the pug seems to be riding fairly comfortably   even though it has both front paws on the handlebar ends.

There are a few notable exceptions, like Tintin’s creator:

Don’t forget Watterson. H e did a fantastic job of making anatomically correct airplanes still look just a little bit cartoony.

Identify? None. Recognize? Most. I’m better with airplanes of that era.

That’s a great question. I read an article about it a long time ago but can’t seem to find it now. Consensus is that it has to do with threading. Most things are right-hand threaded to make it easier to tighten with the more common dominant hand. The rear cog used to be threaded on using a right-hand thread. By keeping the drivetrain on the right, the natural pedaling motion would keep the cog tightened. If it were on the left, the natural pedaling motion would work to loosen the cog unless it was left-hand threaded. There’s also some mention of mounting your steed from the left and keeping the drivetrain away from your pants, but I think the threading issue makes more sense.

Threading is a big issue when it comes to pedals. Standard right-hand threading ensures the right pedal remains tight as one pedals along. On the left side, the pedal is left-hand threaded for the same reason. This wasn’t always the case. In fact, the Wright Brothers claim to have invented left-hand threading on the left pedal & crank arm. From the Wright Brothers’ website :

I love that the fabricator went to great lengths to interpret the drawings so that the front wheel was actually steerable.

Imagine that this is what someone might draw if an airplane was described to them, but neither the artist or descriptor had actually had seen an airplane . “Yeah, so there’s some spinny things near the front—sure, three works, anywhere near the front —a shark fin looking thing on the back—yep that’s good—some wheels on the bottom—just like a bicycle, that’s right. Okay, let’s have some more bourbon and get this thing to print!”

Intersting, thanks. Probably not the only idea the Wright’s claimed to have come up with themselves.
