If you do, Google has a treat for you. For subscribers to their premium services they are giving away a free Nest Mini. I ordered mine even though I have plenty of them, but free is free...

Hmm. No luck for me. Sounds like it may be regional?

I am staying old school still with all of my music locally stored on my phone. Will never give up my damn SD card! Havent added any new music in years though which is rather unfortunate sometimes. But I carry around 90GB of music at all times so I still discover new things even after years of listening to the same shuffle list.

I’m trying to avoid these
creepy smart speakers
as long as humanly possible, as always-on mics are pretty uncomfortable for me.

They are pretty useful. And at least they are only listening for their wake word. There’s way scarier stuff out there in terms of apps that use the microphone on your smartphone.

Bummer. They do say that it’s running through June 30th, so I wonder if you just haven’t been a paid subscriber long enough.

That’s odd. I’m not sure which region; I know you’re on the west coast whilst I’m stuck out here in the Midwest. How long have you been a subscriber to YT Premium or Google Play Music?

I think my current subscription is from 2015 (I was actually a launch subscriber, but cancelled my subscription at a time when I was doing bootstrap startup and money was tight).

“ And at least they are only listening for their wake word.”
Are you absolutely *sure* about that?

Pretty sure. I haven’t pulled out wireshark myself, but if they were sending full audio out it would be extremely easy for anyone monitoring network traffic to see that.
Also my brother, who is much less tolerant of invasive tech than I am, worked with the Alexa team, and isn’t worried about Amazon’s devices, which I take as a good sign.

I saw that yesterday and ordered the freebie too. Now, what can I do with it? I’m pretty integrated into Amazon’s Echo ecosystem already. I think it can control a chromecast, right?

I have youtube premium, not interested in bugging my own home, though.
