Fingers crossed. Turns out burned out side markers affect the rate of turn signal blink. They worked great on 4 way flash, which shares a signal flasher with the signals themselves. This fuse box is still 60's style glass fuses. all the other f bodies I’ve seen had a more modern setup. W ith the 4 way on everything worked as it should at a normal blink rate, but the signals themselves would go once in five to eight seconds.

Things got a little quicker when I shortened up some corroded grounds and soldered new ring terminals etc, but it was cleaning up some corrosion on the rear side markers and replacing the bulbs got everything blinking properly. Funny thing is the side markers are only that. They come on with the parklights and do not blink, but do share a ground wire with the single ground wire right where the trunk latches. So it makes sense in that it’s basically always the ground, but doesn’t make sense that it would effect the blink rate as they are closer to the ground (path of least resistance and whatnot).

Even if I don’t know the scientific expla n ation, (fire made it good) I realigned the electron mojo whick replenished the elusive blinker fluid.

Here’s a picture of the same car in 1981.

Quite good looking, the owner who had passed away, had been driving and working on it since high school in the 70s,  I was troubleshooting it for his brother, and now it sits next to the brother’s mustsang from the same time.

Nice car. The blinker will change rate based on the load presented by the bulbs as you discovered. There’s a bimetallic relay that changes shape when it’s heated, completing the circuit. When one bulb is out, the strip cools faster and as a result, cycles faster.

Sweet. The glass fuses is the correct setup for that car, I dont think Chevy changed them to the other style unti l the 3rd gen cars. I have a buddy with a 77 Camaro and its still uses glass fuses.

The side markers wouldnt flash since they dont have a 1157 bulb in them. They would need a dual filament to blink properly and then they would blink during the day, which I dont think would really help. The reason they affect the flashing is they are still on the same circuit and put a load on the circuit. The flasher needs a certain amount to be able to function properly, that why you need to swap flashers if you do a LED bulb conversion as they draw/load is way different than old style bulbs.
