I am doing gratifying work from my back yard today.

Kinja'd!!!

My clients are mostly family farms, family businesses, and often immigrant-owned businesses. I am very proud of the fact that most often I defend the little guy, and it is exceedingly rare for my client to be the deep pocket in any case. Today, that became fun.

Kinja'd!!!

I am representing a guy who worked his way out of the fields to become a business owner, and who has been pretty successful at it. The co-Defendant in the case is a massive farming company whose name you would recognize; their main product is in the produce section of almost every grocery store in the USA. They implemented an illegal rest break policy, their shitty supervisors enforced it, and it led to a class action lawsuit. My client recruited the workers and ran the payroll, so he got dragged into it. A big settlement is on the table, and they want my client to pay half, and they are threatening to stop doing business with him if he doesn’t pay. He came to me because his prior attorney gave him no options, and he heard I had a reputation for being aggressive. (I know this shocks all of you.)

Kinja'd!!!

They have a big-ass LA law firm that is used to throwing its weight around. This is the kind of thing that annoys me. See, these big farmers treat my clients like one more Mexican that they can fuck over for their benefit. They are very upset at me. I explained that my guy is not going to pay half, or even close to half, to solve a problem that they created. We will contribute, but only if they give us a guaranteed contract on the labor that covers that cost. The fun part was getting them to realize they have no leverage, because if they sue my client they can’t collect even if they win because his personal assets are protected. The plaintiff really cares about them because they are the deep pocket, and my guy is just a vehicle to get to them. This morning, I flipped the leverage, and it was very fun. Lawyers who occupy downtown LA skyscrapers don’t like it when lawyers who occupy Fresno office parks do this to them. He had a panoramic view of SoCal from his window. I have a panoramic view of the McDonald’s and Taco Bell across the street. But I am about to save my guy a shitload of money, and get what he does have to pay out of his contract with them.

This is how it goes as a lawyer. Two days ago I felt shitty about things that were going sideways, today I am on the verge of saving a business. This thing that I do is a roller coaster. I just jumped in the pool, now I have to shower and head to the office.  Life could be worse.

Big companies always think they can shit on the smaller ones.

That really pisses me off.

I hope you show them who’s boss.

I’m insanely jealous. Haven’t been to Wallace Falls in years.

There's a nudist camp up in those parts that I accidently drove through once. Had a very cult-like feel

The Park is currently closed, some folks have decided to hike all the same and were issued some pretty hefty fines . If you do get around to hiking it once it’s open, you’ll see my house on the south side of the river.

Peop le around here are pretty down to earth and for the most part helpful, however in general they tend to keep to themselves. We have 7 acres and can’t see anyone, so I guess we fit in.

Lol. I’ll leave an oppo sticker.

I’m hoping to move somewhere along highway 2 in the next decade. Some property and privacy sounds amazing after 10 years of Kirkland becoming more and more... Well. Just *more*.

Drop by for a beer! Yeah, the property is 7.2 acre s and came with a 670sq ft cottage built in 1957. $273k I lived in Bothell before we bought this place , I hate the burbs

We’re applying for permits tomorrow to build a 30'x50' shop and 2400 sqft house with a three car garage. My wife tells me there’s bedrooms and whatnot in the house too..

It’s good to be the windshield sometimes, instead of the bug :)

As a former big firm lawyer (including as a partner in one of those downtown LA firms, although I was in Texas), seeing people being unreasonable just because they thought they could drove me crazy. Luckily, almost all my clients understood, or could be made to understand, reality before things could get out of hand. But other lawyers - I hate them all! lol

Now as a GC, I get it from the consumer perspective. Everyone thinks they are owed something. It is amazing how many people decide they want $50k because their taco was missing from a $15 order ($15 at our places gets you a lot of food! - easy to missing 1 taco). Then a great customer comes along and leaves a message like, “Hey, just wanted to let you know that I didn’t get double the beef on my taco and paid for it.” Didn’t ask for a thing. Yeah, they got a $50 gift card in the mail because of a 50 cent error. The other people get an apology and their taco plus a free taco at their next visit.
