“I maybe put the top on it once or twice when I got caught in the rain. Most of the times I got caught in the rain, I just kept the speed going.”

Dude is an absolute hero, good work by Mack Hogan here.

Well the US cars have Toyota engines right?

What a legend.

“You smile every day, you have fun,” he said. “Even if you stop to get gas, it’s going to be 15 to 20 minutes because invariably someone comes up to chat with you about the car ... it makes the trip just fun. Driving every day, if you’re going to have to get in the car and drive somewhere, especially in Southern California why not have fun with it?”

I saw two of these yesterday at different times.  One yellow and one black and fully kitted with a bunch of aero stuff.  They are so small.

With these having toyota(ish) reliability and decent(ish) price they’ve been on my list of realistic dream cars for years.  It’s awesome this guy dailied it for that long!

Yes, the 2ZZ-GE.

They’re rather resilient when left stock as a daily run about with good maintenance. The Elise got the later engines that didn’t have the lift bolt failure. It’s over shadowed by the versions of the Honda K20, which by its own right is an excellent engine during the mid 00’s.

Racing’s with them is a bit of different story though. Valve springs and oil pumps are a bit on the weakside.

Yep, the UKDM ones got MG Rover/Powertrain K-Series units, which aren't completely terrible , provided you have the upgraded Land Rover headgasket, but don’t begin to compare to Toyota in the durability department.

they typically go for 30k on the regular regardless of miles, so I’d say 20k is a good deal if it has been maintained well.  If it has bumps and bruises that’s a good thing if you plan on driving it a lot.

Figure its due for a 4-5k engine rebuild, and likely a transmission refresh on top of that. Wouldn't say that's a good deal.

I love the rain idea but problem is traffic lol. Even at 11PM at night all it takes is one CUV around here to be slowly dawdling down the same road.

Had some fun the other night in my MG when it started drizzling and then pouring harder as I got further down my favorite nearby backroad (luckily it was 3AM so no traffic) Once it started pouring I turned around and raced home with the top down through the drizzle and running from the heavier clouds.

I wish I had somewhat more of a beater Vert that I wouldn’t worry as much, but the interior of this car is too perfect!
