God, I’m so slow. I used to run a consistent 7 minute mile when I was in my 30’s. I can’t even jog a slow ass 2 miles right now. I bought some new running shoes, which was slightly concerning as many shoppers were not wearing masks . So now I’m committed. I run, no jog, with my teenage son. He’s running f-ing circles around me. For now.

I used to run a lot in the Marines, now you won’t see me running unless there is a fire.

Way to go! I’ve always hated running even when I could run a 6 minute mile (a long time ago) but I started stationary biking this week and it sucks to start exercising once you’re no longer in your 20's...

Just think of what’s waiting for you on the other side. Years back, when I started hand cycling, I too was slow as heck. But lately, I’ve been dropping my best times (thank you, lockdown), and I feel strong. You’ll get there too. And you’ll embarrass your kid.

Pretty much this. Between the Marines and a police academy, I’ve run about all I really want to. I’m happy to hike (with less than my body weight on my back) until I’ve dropped just about every person in my circle now, but breaking stride is no fun . This is why I just bought a bike. Riding a bike is at least fundamentally fun.

You’ve got to start somewhere. Keep it up, you’re doing good.

I love to hike, surf and kayak but I think all my mileage has caught up. I’m about to be 43, not old but...

Thanks, but no, no I won’t. I’ve come to terms with age and joint pain. I used to run. Now I jog. If I was on a bike, I’d kick his ass, as I love long rides. But I don’t have the time for a three hour ride a few times a week. So, a jogging I will go.

I’m 51, 6’4” and 230+\- pounds. Mileage ain’t the problem. It’s weight and age. But, I’m determined not to be over square in my pant size, so I gotta do something.

I used to do a spin class at my local ymca 10+ years ago. That was a kick ass way to keep in shape. If I had some place to put a spin bike in my house, I would in a heart beat.

Right now, I can dust my daughter using my arms against her legs. It’s cool, but I’ll actually be happier when she gets fast enough to dust me .

Well, just drink water and maybe even do two nutritious meals a day. I have a crazy metabolism but I can lose muscle easy if I don’t keep it up. I have some injuries that can get re injured if I’m not careful, I’ve had to bounce back from things a few times and it isn’t getting easier.

Water is essential. My kid thinks I drink way too much. I thinks I’m not drinking enough. Water that is

My kid is 17, and plays soccer. He’s about a 1/2 inch taller than me, which hurts so bad, and could easily pick up his pace with no effort at all. I blame the beer and scotch. Pretty much the scotch.

In my 20s, I was doing 60-80 miles/week on foot, then doubling that on my bike.
I miss those days, now.

The first thing to do is re-frame your nomenclature. You’re not “jogging” you’re running. Doesn’t matter how fast you go; jogging is bullshit. Running is what you’re doing.

Good work getting out. That’s awesome you run with your son too. Good bonding/competitive time together.
I would harass some of my uncles that I was so much faster than them back when I was in better shape. Their retort was either “don’t trip”, or “yeah, but you gotta sleep sometime”. Both good points.
Well done.

I know how you feel. I’m 52 and my son is 16. He just started jogging 6 months ago and he can already run circles around me.
I’ve been a consistent jogger for 20 years, and I found that I started to slow down a lot in my early 40s. I gave up on trying to be fast 8 years ago and now I get out just to relax and enjoy the scenery. I find that varying the terrain has kept the joint pain away. I had knee problems jogging the sidewalks of St. Louis for 10 years. The pain stopped after I started running more trails after moving to Seattle.

I have a friend who used to be a spin class teacher those classes can be insane , I just wanted to do it to get my ass in shape while the weather here is super-rainy.
It is a serious workout for sure though.

Too serious, as in too hard on your body. Go walk on rolling terrain or ride outside on same. The pace will dictate itself, don’t push.
