Still needs some adjustment, and the rear exhaust hangers. She sounds great, but now I can hear that I have a belt slipping. The deets: pypes street pro 2.5 inch crossover exhaust (sgf11) with race pro mufflers.

Install went ok. Turns out with the oldsmobile 403 and longtube headers, the collector extension pieces are not necessary. Its a one-size adjusts to all kind of kit, which requires some cutting. My initial concern, following instructions was to shorten the x pipe to fit the mufflers. I figured I would make up any length with the extensions to the headers. Nope! Luckily it fit perfect. Needed to shorten one of the legs as the width was slightly too long.

Sorry, no video. I don’t have a youtube account. Maybe another time.

It is amazing how effective these mufflers are considering they are a glasspack type straight through design. Supposedly these are their quietest and best flowing mufflers. Not sure why you would choose anything else, unless you like annoying neighbors. Burbly, with just the right amount of sound. And yes, I am now exhausted.

Those look just like my recalled hf jackstands. Did you check the part number already?

Can you look at both sets and see the difference in the defect?

Supposedly it was an issue with the length of the teeth or the ratchet or somesuch due to worn out tooling. Probably would need yo mic it out to see any difference

Nice work. Pypes makes some good stuff, I used their stainless downpipes for my Poncho 400. I did not mind annoying the neighbors and used Cherrybombs first and then F lowmaster rounds. It was loud. Also I couldn’t use regular mufflers cause they didn’t fit under the car. :P

Yeah the mufflers sit kinda low, although presumably the factory exhaust wasn’t much better

Same mufflers I have on the Chevelle (though I made my own H-pipe instead of dealing with a welded-together X). Should sounds good!

Annoying the neighbors is the only reason to have a loud exhaust. I'm thinking about quieter mufflers with cut outs for when I pull in the lot.

Yup. My old factory duel exhaust sat really low, especially after a few years. The E-brake cable seemed to run under the mufflers to keep them propped up a bit. I discovered how low they were when one day I decided to go to one of those quick change oil places. The lip surrounding the pit was maybe 1-1/2" - 2" high. Sure enough I was pulling in and before I knew it one of my mufflers caught on the darn thing and somehow yanked it down and the exhaust outlet pipe ended up wrapped around the axle. They had to cut the whole mess loose with a torch to get me out of there.

It was a combination of low mufflers and sagging springs.

They sell a kit with a large muffler that sits in the empty space between the axle and the gas tank, but it is alot more expensive as it is essentially custom to these cars.

The 1978 Pontiac 400 TA’s had a single 1-inlet 2-outlet muffler that sat up in the space between the rear axle and the trunk, so the whole exhaust was tucked up under the car all neat and tidy. The manifolds went to a single pipe then to a single cat and then to a single muffler which had the 2 outlets to each chrome exhaust time.

By 1979 the Olds engine cars (the only one I have experience with anyway) had a Y-pipe coming off the cat to the dual resonators to the dual exhaust tips. This definitely sat lower.

At one time, there was a Pontiac performance company H-O Racing Specialties out of California that sold performance products and kits. They had a crossfire exhaust system that was custom made to tuck up in that space where the ‘78 muffler went, but it was meant for dual exhaust systems. It was really no more than 2 Cherry Bombs that were welded into a bracket that used the stock exhaust hangers, but had to be custom piped to your application. Essentially they crossed over your exhaust L-R and R-L.

I need to drag out my old Pontiac race catalogs and scan them if they don’t exist elsewhere on the net. I have all the Herb Adams VSE and H-O Racing material around here somewhere. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of love for the Olds engined cars. If I had known better, I would have bought a 74 or earlier TA when they were cheap. Crap, there w as a girl at my college that drove a ‘73 Super Duty 455. I should have gotten to know her better...

The H-O Crossfire muffler.

This is the kit pypes sells. I think i didnt buy it originally because it was 100$ more.

In my defense I was super broke.

The dual underslung mufflers is correct for your car anyway, so yeah, I never saw the need to go backwards to that tucked in crossflow system.  I’d do what you did too.
