I can’t see or make out anything obvious, nor do I want to break it since the part doesn’t exist anymore... Repair manual doesn’t say, no BoobToob video on this gen...

There is normally a push and turn or pull and turn way to get the rod and knob out. I never worked on Toyotas but I imagine it's something of the sort.

Do you have enough access to get a cleaner in there without removal? Something like this?

Kinja'd!!!

Might be worth a try for maybe 10 bucks and not breaking shit and driving yourself crazy?

Let’s hope its not like the Audi/VW headlight switch that is clipp ed in a way that you can’t unclip it without breaking it or breaking the rest of the switch (i break did both last time when i tried to do it without breaking too much things...).

(not my video but it shows how annoying it is)

The before (right, the rubbery original part ) and a mix of the after with the new part (chinese 5$ part which is fortunately in solid plastic that looks better ) not mounted on the center and a hybrid with an A3 8L center part (which is a phase 1 which are solid plastic, the phase 2 being in the same rubbery shit as the A4 part ) with the A4 B7 exterior (they are fully compatible ; i don’ t remember if behind it, it was the “electronics” of the A3 or the A4 but it just required a small trimming to do so as there is one or two more LEDs on the A4 switch ) :

Looks like a thread on the 2nd pic. Try turning the whole switch thingy behind the dash?

My best guess is that the knob is press fit on the keyed shaft, pull it off and slide it out before yo ...you know what...this is just a minefield of d ouble entendre and I’m sorry.

But I do think its a press fit knob. Before pulling it just hook up to output to a 12v source to see if its even the problem. Or just check the output for continuity.

if you MUST take it off...

Take off plastic knob.

use a needle nose or snap ring pliers or whatever you have to turn the nut with the two holes.

I would guess knob pulls off and maybe that little tab above the shaft is some sort of release?

Nope, the tab is a positioning stud, to keep the switch body -or maybe anchor plate¿) from turning.

I'm with you on the thing with the two holes probably being a pin-spanner nut.

Thats what it looked like to me too... Disconnect the wire plug and turn the whole switch body? Though the collar behind the knob looks suspiciously like a pin-spanner nut, and there appears to be a positioning stud... ... This assembly is a new one to me. Never seen anything quite like it.

Here is my best guess.

Kinja'd!!!

From this picture it looks like you need some sort of spanner wrench. This reminds me of the “nut” (for the lack of a better word) that holds a grinder wheel. But this is hollow the put the dimmer shaft through and threaded as the bolt that hole the dimmer in place.

I’d rotate the switch and see if there is a drift pin keeping it in place. Those are not easy. But it’s likely pressed on.

Then a tool like this to “unscrew it”

So my 85 dodge, the headlight switch has pulls out to turn them on and twists for dash light brightness, on the body of the switch under the dash is a button to allow the knob and the post it is mounted to to slide out of the switch body so you can replace the switch unit, i wonder if yours is similar?

Video that is hopefully relevant

Penetrating oil may help, but that nut has been sitting there for 40 years and it may not be easy to turn.

As a last-ditch effort, you could try removing as much of the alignment pin above the shaft as you can from the front. You can then use a punch and hammer to push the remaining portion behind the metal face. This will distort the bracket with the threads, but it might let you rotate the switch from behind enough to loosen the nut on the front.

If you can get the connector off from the back, you may be able to bypass the dimmer. You might be able to put a resistor in there that gives you the correct level of illumination. It’s not as good as having variable lighting, but at least you would be able to see the gau ges at night.

yeah , twist it back and fourth rapidly to clean the contacts

and while you’re swisting the knob back and fourth, go “e-oh-e-oh-e-oh”

twisting back ‘n’ forth ‘n’ back ‘n’ forth ‘n’ etc after getting some sort of electrical cleaner or solvent applied.

If you’ve got a mini-ductor (inductive heating tool) that you can get in there, it’s probably going to be more effective than just blasting the whole area with a hairdryer , but either approach might help some solvent wick in farther than it would otherwise. Assuming there’s actually a seized fastener to come loose.

In looking at it I still think the above post—tool suggestion is the right track. Even with the tang you should be able to wiggle the big mechanism a little, I would try to wiggle it back and forth while holding the outside piece as best you can with needle nose pliers. Or get the special adjust blea tool.

The two holes in the thingy are so you can turn it I am about 88% sure. Could also try vice grips on it as a last resort if you don’t mind goobering it up.

Lastly, though it should be firstly, does the plastic knob come off? Sometimes the pull, sometimes there is a little press release pin on the bottom side.  Good luck!

this pic shows it all.

The bezel with two blind holes in it goes thru the dash and threads into a sheet metal bracket with a clinched nut.

If you can’t rotate the bezel with the two holes try holding that still (from the outside with a giant ass vice grip) and rotating the sheet metal bracket, it’ll give you more leverage.

Also try some rust penetrator on the backside of the thread where the two meet.

Kinja'd!!!

The knob is press fit onto the square shaft and will need to be removed to take everything off.

Pull the knob off, it’s keyed to a shaft. Behind that is a ‘nut’ (without flats) that needs a spanner w rench, like this adjustable style. Put some good penetrating oil on the threads first.

You should probably try turning at the tips instead of the handle. I’ll use a pair of channel-locks at the base or right where the tips go in. That way you aren’t losing torque through the handle and pivot point of the pliers.

Does that make sense? I’ve actually had to remove a grinder but like that with a Chanel lock and two sawzall blades as the pins.

Other thank that I’d put some locking pliers one the whole thing and gradually tightening as it slips. Basically start loose and let it slip and work your way up. Since the center is hollow you don’t want to squeeze the knob rod.

I don’t know much about electricity either, from your updated post. I’ve been zapped a few times though. The dimmer coils look pretty clean though. Our old Astro van had a bad dimmer switch and melted the switch. No fire.
