agreed good flick

a lot of the americans burried at margraten werent killed here tho many  were killed around germany but they didnt want to bury them in enemy territory...and thats how they got here

theres also at least one really unlucky tank gunner there...got hit in the head by his gun after a low hanging branch hit it

theres been a big project trying to match all the graves to the pictures and stories belonging to them... was supposed to be shown this year as its been 75 years...but rona

At 2:55 in the video it brings up Earl Joseph Lawson, who is described as a farmer and single, with no dependents. No birth date listed. KIA April 13th 1945.

His listing strikes me as even more depressing than most, because his grave stone and brief military record are probably the only evidence of his very existence. No friends or relatives to even provide a birth date. He’s just one step away from being an Unknown Soldier, completely forgotten to history. And it’s sad that the only reason we, or anyone, knows of him is because of the circumstances of his death.

Beautiful. Thank you for remembering them.

I usually bring my kids to our city’s veterans memorial garden today. Not sure I can handle it this year. The Vietnam vets show up to pay their respects to their lost friends. It’s hard to witness the pain on their faces.

Oppo, take some time to remember a couple guys I knew. Tommy and Michael. Tommy was a combat marine that my family tried to help out but couldn’t. Michael was a classmate of mine and a member of the 101st Airborne division. They weren’t killed in combat but were most definitely casualties of the Iraq war.

Let’s all try to love each other today. That’s what Memorial Day is really about.

“Our mates are diamonds and we shine like steel, can’t beat us down, the wounds will never heal. Can’t take us, for a ride, can’t rob a warrior of his pride. Warriors.”

Yeah there are quite a few of those, m y family is in the Pacific on Oahu and fought in the pacific, my great uncle died on day one on the USS Oklahoma at Pearl. His name is on a memorial wall and the Navy knows his details. I was once called by a graduate student working on a project trying to get more information so we told him what he needed. We gave them a few pictures for the expanded records.

His buddies knew him, and I guarantee you they  remembered him. And now we’re both remembering him. Write his name down and make sure to remember him at least once a year. I just did. We can make him immortal. He deserves it.

I’ll be dropping a beer off for your uncle at the USS Arizona memorial today. I know you have buddies who are thirsty. Let me know how many cases I need to bring.
