Our washing machine died. A feather pillow exploded in the wash and packed lots of inconvenient places with feathers. Then the drum wouldn’t turn and the belt burnt up. So I looked on Craigslist in bed last night, found this washer/dryer set and emailed the guy at around 10:30 pm. He replied and we exchanged a few messages and he delivered my washer/dryer at noon today. Craigslist can be good . Then the chore of installing them and fixing the dryer vent tube and all the other stuff I’d been ignoring for like twenty years . I even leveled them this time. And hung the mirror that had been sitting around for years and years. My exciting weekend.

Good you didn’t get something more modern. I have been nothing but disappointed with the newer Kenmores we bought a few years ago. I’ve already had to repair the dryer, the lining of the drum is flaking and peeling, the washer leaves white residue on all the dark clothes (and presumably the lighter ones, you just can’t see it), you have to leave the lid up or it will start to stink, and you have to run a 90-minute cycle of just bleach to clean it out. I’m not impressed.

Craigslist can definitely be awesome - just so much less traffic on it nowadays with FB marketplace exploding.

I genuinely miss what CL was 2 years ago.

New appliances overall have let me down. I wish I'd kept my hideous olive green washer and dryer from the late 60's...

Minus the fancy hot water tanks. I love having infinite hot water

And newer stuff is less repairable. The sheer amount of trouble we’ve had with our  refrigerators having their ice machines crap out weeks after purchase and somehow be impossible to replace is crazy.

My old dryer was becoming problematic, but the washer still going strong. I wish I had just replaced the dryer with a simple cheapie.

While the electronics are more involved, the basic function of the dryer is the same, and I’ve already had to replace temp sensors. That much I can do.

I hope these do not turn out to be too new for all of those reasons.

Yeah. And now they’re charging a $5 fee to post cars.

In other news, it looks like my motherboard has two PCIe slots but if I put a big GPU into the second slot, it would be right up against the bottom of the first GPU and cut off the air supply to the fans.

i bought a new Maytag top load with an agitator. https://www.maytag.com/washers-and-dryers/washers/top-load-washers/p.top-load-extra-large-capacity-agitator-washer-6.0-cu.-ft.mvwb965hw.html

so far after 6 months i have nothing bad to say about it. we can clean our king sized bed blankets with no problems. It even has a option to fill the tub with about 14 inches of water. We needed an agitator since we are on washable diapers for the kids.

That killed the auto and motorcycle listings here, which hurt the rest of it hard. I sold a bunch of stuff last fall and started listing both on CL and FB and if I was lucky I’d have 1 person reach out on a CL listing but would have 5 or 6 on FB easy on a not super-popular item but a ton on a popular one.

I don’t even list stuff on CL anymore.

Didn’t reply to the second part of your reply - yeah that’s a common problem with today’s giant GPUs. I shuffled around a few of mine so I could stack them. I’ve got a big 3 slot RX 5700 XT that got moved to my workstation that way my blower fan 2 slot RX 5700 could go in my plex  server, which was a full ATX board which left 1 slot of space between the RX 5700 and the second x16 slot which let me put my GTX 1050 in the server too.

The Visa card dispute people called me yesterday regarding my dispute with the guy who foisted the rusty corroded GPU on me. The guy had responded with a one-sided narrative which completely tried to cast me as a whiny buyer with buyer's remorse. My position with the Visa people was that if he'd sent me a reasonable merchandise and it didn't fit, then too bad for me. But he sent a horrible specimen and ignored me when I reached out to him. Sounded like the Visa claims adjuster was sympathetic to me. I'm wondering if the seller is going to want his part back. BTW, all my 9 million points were earned with that ugly-ass card...

I imagine you’ll get to keep the money as they make a lot more money off of you than the dude you paid.

Never done a credit card chargeback through ebay only through a dispute through ebay with them which 75% of the time you return the item.

I definitely added extra fans to blow more air through my case which keeps it cool, but it definitely is hot.

Me too. Two years ago, if I simply searched "scooter" there would be 300+ listings this time of year. Now? There's a couple dozen, and most of those are dealer ads.

Nice!

Craigslist can be great. FB Marketplace too.

I actually met Mrs. Shop Teacher through a Craigslist personal ad.

My dad took our old dryer apart 5 times and eventually laid all the wiring out and tested the voltage in every sensor and motor and still couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. Eventually just had to replace it because it was unrepairable. Those electronics do complicate things.

It’s brutal, I especially miss the CL email alerts you could build - man I had so many of them firing me emails keeping me distracted.

FB search is also awful, showing you things it thinks you want to see and basically zero filters.

FB has it’s plusses though, I haven’t been ghosted by anywhere near as many people and also a lot more responses both from sellers and for things I’ve listed.

I never did the email alerts thing. I liked the anticipation of what I might find, and the “gambling” or when to keep searching, and when to let it sit and breath awhile.

FB search is a freaking joke, but what FB has going  for it, is the ability to randomly browse in a way that wasn’t really possible with CL. I love doing that as a buyer, or usually just window shopper.

I’ve been ghosted by plenty on FB, but that’s just how things go. I definitely get way more action on FB. Things that I never would have bothered trying to sell on CL, will often move on FB. I’ll throw something up for between $5 and $20, and if it’s a good price, it’ll often go quick. I do porch pickups for stuff like that. Or sometimes I’ll take it into work, and leave it on the bed of my truck. I snap a picture of where the truck is parked and send it to them. I tell them the item is in the truck, leave the money under the bed mat. Nobody has stiffed me yet. I’m sure someone will someday, but I don’t do that unless it’s something cheap.

What I miss most off all about “the good old days” of CL, is being able to be easily figure out fair market value for things, just by watching CL for a week or two. Seeing what listings move , and which ones sat. You really can’t do that anymore. Things are so scattered between so many apps.

I couldn’t stand Offer Up or Let Go.

Is there a single-thickness GPU that’s any good?

I haven’t gone that low with FB yet, my floor is $30 for it not being worth my time to sell but never would have sold something on CL for $30.

I tried offer up and let go and they were just too small - I got no traction.

Its the “invention” of the porch pickup, and ease of posting with one pic in the app, that’s made me willing to bother with lower prices items. Sometimes I’ll post something for $5-10, and of it hasn’t sold by the next time we ma ke a donation run (we do those probably 3 times a year), I pull the ad and donate it.

With CL my floor was $30-40, depending on my mood.

If you hunt there were a few manufacturers that made a GTX 1050 in single slot and that puts out ~200k per day but I’d honestly be worried about the long term life of a single slot card folding so I wouldn’t pay much for one.

Other than that you’re limited to a GTX 1030 with really isn’t worth it, the community says they put out ~60k PPD.

Yeah that would do it - probably won’t work too well for me. I live out in the boonies and work downtown both places where there isn’t much foot traffic. I’ll give it a try next time I’m selling something cheap though.

On another note how’s the traffic selling stuff now?  I have bought a thing or two but haven’t tried to sell any just yet.

Gotcha. I live and work in a spot that is very easy to get to from a huge swathe of Chicagoland. That undoubtedly helps.

Selling is going well. I haven’t been trying to sell a to n of things lately, but I have sold two scooters on behalf of my buddy in the last week. One sold within a few hours, and the other took four days. I sold a scooter of my own a few weeks ago within 24 hours. I sold that Chinese dirt bike about a month or so ago, that went in a couple of hours.

There is a ton of junk out there, but the junk I sell all runs.

I would have thought this was a bad time to sell things, but it seems that the people who have money are bored and looking to spend it.

I wish I had taken you up on your offer to sell me those cheap bikes. I could have had some fun with them and flipped them for a little profit by now.
