I don’t have the patience at the moment to read this, but the illustrations (that hijack y our scrolling, but I think it’s worth it) and depth (ha) of this piece make it something I’ll definitely return to.

Here’s a good sub tale for you:

In the fall of 1968 the DSV Alvin (later famous exploring the wreck of the Titanic) sunk in approximately mile deep water after it’s support cables broke while it was being lowered into the water. The three man crew escaped successfully, but rough conditions meant the submarine was not recovered until 10 months later. When they got the submarine drained out, they discovered one of the crew’s lunch, a sandwich waterlogged, but otherwise entirely intact:

The extreme cold and low oxygen environment, combined with the wrapping had kept it safe from scavengers and microbes for almost a year at the bottom of the ocean.

I’m impressed they were able to escape.

That was a fantastic read, I really hope they took a camera crew along for some of it or are going to edit together the footage they got at those depths.

My son and I got really into deep dive subs around the start of this quarantine lark and watched all the documentaries on the Mariana trench we could find.

It’s ridiculous that before this expedition only 3 people had been down there and these guys added 5 more names in multiple dives in one trip.
