I learned about those in the Weird and Wonderful Autos book from 1975. (The local library had a couple of gems hiding in the kids section).

That book shaped my childhood, we ended up buying it from the library, and I literally read it until pages fell out.

It had several examples of interesting cars before there was a “right way” to build cars, and a short history of land speed records. I highly recommend it.
