My computer was on and folding when I left work this morning. After work it was off, I tried pressing the power button, then I checked to see if the cord worked its way out of the power supply, then when I turned off the switch on the power supply it made a sparking sound . So I pulled it out of the case, googled how to test a PSU, and jumped the pins and watched the smoke show. Oh well 5year warranty.

Yikes, good that it didn’t start a fire!

Bummer! Did the house possibly get too warm during folding?

Steady temps of 18-19*C.

Just an ungood PSU, bound to happen at some point.

Such is life...
You clearly should be glad that folding helped you st ress test the PSU before it was out of warranty :)

That's a bummer. Doubly so because I think the power supply market might be a bit thin right now.

I submitted a RMA request to Thermaltake we'll see what they say. I don't really want to buy a new one if it's going to be replaced for free. I might have to install my old less powerful PSU and underclock or remove my graphics card.

Dang. What brand is the PSU? I keep to Seasonic. Still going since 2011.

Thermaltake Smart M 850W.
I had upgraded my graphics card but didn’t have enough power so instead of waiting to order in a better one I bought the only one in-stock in the city that was big enough for my graphics card.
