There are two guys who fly out of KREG who share a hangar with at least four gyrocopters. One of them frequently flies a path that takes him over my house and for years I’ve stepped outside to wave hello when I hear him coming. He usually flies a yellow bird. Last week he was flying something new.
I also happened to have my wife’s D50 handy, so I was able to get better pictures than I can with my iPhone.
After circling my place, he headed north as usual. I happened to catch him waving to someone else on the ground.
I’m putting the big lens on in anticipation of his next flyby. I should be able to get something even better then.

I am always amazed that those things, like, fly.

Saw a guy flying around Phoenix in a powered paraglider last weekend. He was very high up. Seems like a bad idea in the middle of a big city.

I used to joke with a coworker that I was going to buy one of these to commute to work in.
Hmm... I wonder what a gyrocopter costs anyway....

They’re pretty cheap, but ICBC rates them as a jumbo jet so it’s gonna be $100 ,0 00 a year to insure.
#BC logic.

I’ve seen a few flying in my area. One guy flew regularly for a few weeks then I never saw him again. Two paratrikes flew by a few weeks ago. That was the first time I’d seen any in the area.
Legally, with the right equipment (radio, mode-C transponder), a minimum of a sport pilot license, and with permission from air traffic control, a powered paraglider may enter controlled airspace.

Come to Louisiana for two weeks. We’ll go over to Autogyro of Louisiana. You’ll get your Sport License and I’ll get my autogyro endorsement.

lol, I have investigated quite a few “registered in Alberta” files. Trust me, they don’t work out in the end for those people.

Good.
If I have to pay through the nose every month so should they.

It tends to be cheap every month with a crippling payment at the end when they have an uninsured loss.

Aren’t they deathtraps? I’d rather have the powered paraglider since I have lots of parachute experience and you can land it with no power.

Oh, I dunno. This guy has been flying them for a while, and he gives it the thumbs up. Who wouldn’t trust that endorsement?

I worked with Aussies for years and they said they use those on huge ranches in Oz, and there are quite a few deaths. Government there says, “with the aircraft responsible for the worst fatality rate per hours flown”
I am very good with a parawing so I would go with that and a rotax backpack motor thing. I think it would feel more like flying anyway. My mom’s friend has been hang gliding for many years, I’m not sure about that either.

For pure fun, it would probably come down to cost. But, I really like the idea of maneuvering, climbing, etc. under my own power.
I wonder if the make jet packs you can strap on a wheelchair.

I started my day searching YouTube for anyone who built the
ram
jet tipped helicopter from the old ad
in
popular mechanics. Disappointingly I didn’t
find any fliers

Right next to the ad for the plans to b uild your own hovercraft. Man the dreams those ad’s spawned. ( If not for all of the lame parents standing in our way...)
