I read about that this morning. The event has a long history of going bad. That’s why they had so many sheriff deputies on hand. For those who don’t know, Crystal Beach is a total pain in the ass to get to. From Houston, it’s a long trek east to Winnie, then nearly an hour south and west, or it’s a trip to Galveston and then a ferry ride across the channel. Either route takes at least an hour and a half. When I lived in Galveston, nobody I knew wanted to go to Bolivar for any reason, even partying, unless the party was going to be a two-day affair.
It’s no wonder that people feel like they can go out there, drink themselves stupid and suffer no repercussions.

Trochesset said a majority of those arrested don’t own Jeeps.
“I can’t blame it on the Jeep clubs,” the sheriff said.

If they ever get around to building the Ike Dike, it seems like it would be pretty easy to add a bridge, though that wouldn’t make it that much more accessible from anywhere but Galveston (the bigger gain would be making Galveston more accessible)

I haven’t been up on the latest discussions, but it seems that would be a ridiculously expensive solution with very little return. Most of the port access is further up the ship channel, so adding additional transportation options would primarily benefit the tourism industry. Given that the new Houston Ship Channel bridge is only 1/4 mile long and cost $1 B, a bridge from Galveston to Bolivar would be over 2 miles long and might cost 8-10 times as much.
A billion dollars would run the ferries for 20 years.

With the Ike Dike in place the bridge wouldn’t have to be anywhere near that big, so would be a lot cheaper.
Now the Ike Dike itself would be extremely expensive, but still very cheap compared to flooding, and Global Warming might make it necessary to keep out rising seas even in non-storm conditions.

Really? I can't wrap my head around that view point. Why must it always be an organizations fault, why can't we simply blame the idiots that caused the ruckus in the first place. How would you recommend the Jeep Owners handle this, they had an event crashed and the ones who crashed it got out of hand. What were they supposed to do?

The current proposed design doesn’t include a bridge and uses a series of flood gates to allow active flow between the bay and the ocean. Each of those gates would require a span and there would be a large span over the main gate that would be similar to the Ship Channel Bridge. The extra height to allow shipping traffic under the bridge would increase the cost by $1-2 B. All of the extra spans, even though they wouldn’t need to be high enough for shipping traffic, would significantly increase the overall cost.
This is not a solution to rising seas due to global warming. There’s significant water/bio exchange between the bay and the ocean on a daily basis and the marshes along the bay are a major nursery area for the gulf. Cut that off and there would be huge impacts to animal life in the gulf.

I had a friend in college that would dive the San Marcos at the end of every summer. He found lots of rings and watches (this was before cell phones). If he could find the owner, he would return the item. If not, it became part of his college party fund.

I’m saying that you could add one or more bridges over the gates. You are right that they would have to be high, but they wouldn’t have to be long.
And you are right that it’s not marketed as a global warming defense. However, if your choices are changing the ecosystem or having the Houston metro area under water, you are going to change the ecosystem. Destroying those wetlands due to changes in salinity isn’t any worse them having them be destroyed by rising seas.

Nice! Those river divers find all sorts of rad stuff especially after holidays .Watches are a big thing for sure. Lol I mooned one of those dudes on the Comal once. He was right under me and I just pulled down the swim trunks. The much larger dude came out of the water quickly and thought it was funny.... thankfully

It’s not just one span over the main gates. They would have to create additional spans over every one of the smaller gates.
There are alternative solutions that have less ecosystem risk. One is to protect Houston instead of trying to protect the entire bay. The issue isn’t just about salinity. It’s about perceived barriers to movement patterns. Some species will not move through those kinds of artificial barriers. As for the wetlands, the primary driver for the plants which make up saltwater wetlands is water depth. If you increase the water depth in an established wetland, the deeper plants will drown, but the newly submerged areas will be colonized by primary successors and the wetlands will move up-slope as secondary and tertiary succession happens.

The best place to dive is just downstream of the weirs. It’s also the most dangerous place for both floaters and divers. My wife, before we ever met, got caught in one and nearly drowned. She was saved by a fellow who lives right next to the weir and spends his summer weekends waiting to rescue people who get caught.
The rolling action which tends to drown people also relieves people of their worldly goods, making it an excellent place to find stuff.

No height appreciable height is needed to pass over the smaller gates though, since they would not be open for shipping plans I’ve seen.
Abandoning the whole bay area to flooding seems like a bad idea, when you could protect the whole region for a reasonable price.

Have you seen t he Galveston Bay Park proposal? It provides protection, increases marsh area, preserves the bay’s function, keeps the pass open, and costs the same or less.

No but if a bunch of assholes start a fight in the stands (looking at you Raider fans) it’s not the team’s fault either. This event started as a family-friendly beach cruise but unfortunately in the last few years it has attracted a few idiots.
