I can’t decide if the comments on the recent FP post about the new 911 Turbo are a sign of the times that have us all exhibiting symptoms of cabin fever or if it’s a true representation of Jalopnik’s peanut gallery as a whole.
I’m a Porschephile in my late 20s and certainly not in a position to wedge payments on a $200,000 Porsche into my monthly budget. I do not find myself, however, feeling compelled to spew venom about the fact that such a car does indeed cost $200k. I’m not always the jolliest guy on the block but I’m struggling to understand the insane amount of comments essentially asking why Jalopnik would even comment on such a gluttonous car built on the very foundation of excess.
I’d love to know everything about the new 911 Turbo. I don’t care about the silly nomenclature. I don’t care that armchair QBs deem it so quick to 60 that it renders the car’s performance “unusable” on the street.
I know it’s irresponsible to label a community based on an irreverent comment section but it’s become so exhausting to read. Perhaps I’m being too sensitive? I n a time without the 4 major sports, I turn to the auto enthusiast community for some fun and positivity more than ever . That’s not what I’m finding on the FP as of late. A rather vanilla rant, I know, but Oppo’s been my car shoulder to lean on for the longest time despite my propensity to lurk rather than post.

People get incredibly butthurt on the FP, and it’s definitely not new. They’re all armchair McQueens and Sennas.
I know that Jalopnik probably has the most reader interaction in the online automotive world, and there are occasional pearls in there, but it’s mostly... blah.

Starred for the username!
I try to find the FP comments amusing if I don’t find them useful. Some days it’s undeniably harder than others.

My sentiments exactly - I’ve replaced most of the time I once spent on the FP with Bring a trailer. If you’ve got a better alternative for automotive news, I’m all ears.

Nice post, I am definitely appreciate that .
If you haven’t seen this series, you’d probably like at least some of it, although without some serious shade tree engineering you wouldn’t have quite the same open air experiences in an XJ...

Now that they’re all Trubo, I’d like to see Porsche come out with a non-turbo model called “911 Non-Turbo” :p

I am getting very critical of supercars, but that is mainly due to the death of the 40-80k “affordable” segment. RIP lotus. I want cheaper performance rather than better performance. I am still very interested in the turbo, as it would probably be my go-to choice if I made that kind of money since it is actually built to put miles on. I think the 911 is important because it lives in the inbetween zone. Performance wise though it’s basically a racecar.

Certainly agree that is a void that’s really opened up in the past few years. Speaking of Lotus , a V8 Esprit has a reserved spot in my dream garage

Being shadowbanned from FP was actually a great sanity helper for me. No more interacting with the glorified Youtube commenters and Wikipedia-schooled “expert” journalists. They did me a favor.
911 Turbos have always been expensive, who cares? I can’t see why anyone would be upset. Even back 45 years ago when the model was new and the working class had it a lot better than now, a 911/930 Turbo was a fantasy item.
Make mine in white ( or maybe blue) , cabrio, slantnose, from the olden days.

I’m with you....the new Turbo S seems to be a 991 GT2 RS ‘Touring Lite ’ - the performance is incredible.
Funny how everyone loved the GT2 RS — rarely did I see a complaint that it was too fast or unusable on the street. But the new 911 Turbo is ‘too fast ’ ??? (I think Farrah really dumped on it)
I’d love to see someone honestly compare the two after driving them for a few days back to back.
Also, it’s a love/hate with the front page. Everyone once in a while I comment and then before I can say “Why did I do that” I get replies that make me scratch my head.

My old man’s boss in the 80's drove a white on white slant 930 cab with a white on white Countach to match. I don’t think the phrase “good old days” is a misnomer.

I hope his third car was a white Testarossa. Cars I salivated over as a kid in the 80s, and white was a great color for them.
I find those old cars a lot more interesting than new ones. Still unaffordable, and I am not upset.

The last 4-5 episodes of TST podcast Farrah has made several comments about the sheer lunacy of the new Turbo S’s acceleration and speed. He’s also brought up the whale of a speeding ticket he landed in it. I’ll give Matt the benefit of the doubt to blame the car this time around... lol.

There is a guy in our building that regularly drives his turbo cabriolet into to work, (or at least prior to pandemic) - not an S and it is that sandy tan color. Not exactly what I would do but I’m sure he really enjoys it.

It’s been going downhill for a while. 2 years ago I never went to dismiss replies, then it slowly became necessary anytime you had a different opinion, view, or if you played devils advocate.
Almost every environmental article is being used to drum up clicks and cause sparring in the comments, more often than not by the author themselves. I have no desire to voice my expertise if it’s contrary to the article because it ends up with nothing but snark and clout chaser replies who can’t possibly fathom there’s half truths, grey areas, if not another side to a coin that’s valid .
Kinja was supposed to keep riff-
raff like this away but now I don’t think it matters. It’s being guided
into any other sign-
up and comment area.

The thing is, whatever you spend, there is someone who can spend more. However moar hp you can chip, someone can do moar! More of this or that is meaningless as we watch 6cyl Ferraris which used to be the red headed stepchild go for triple 6 digits!
Love a vehicle on its own merits! If you have been as bored as I have, watch how many comments on the “comfort food” old station wagons and malaise American luxury cars on BAT these days.

well, near as I can tell, if you adjusted for inflation a 1980 911 Turbo would cost $130,000 in today’s money. So given how much faster, better, and safer the new one is I’d say the price is not out of line.
I wouldn’t have been able to afford one back then, and I can’t afford one now.

There is undoubtedly a massive sense of nostalgia during the stay-at-home orders many of us are under. I think it’s given us all some extra time to reflect on and enjoy things we did years ago while life has slowed a bit. Hell, I’ve watched 90s Motorweek’s , damn near every past Chicago (sans Cubs, Go Sox) playoff game I can find online and even bought a new mountain bike, pitch back baseball net and a basketball hoop - shit I haven’t had since I was a kid.

Theres a market for the stock buyback crowd, vehicles which cost more than some homes. Without going too political, I think there is a newfound tie to not only real but realistic memories these days. Might just be healthy! I just ordered a reasonably priced Dean flying V today! 700 bucks and I am soo excited!

It’s kind of amusing since most automotive journalism products over the last 75 years have focused primarily on the expensive and largely unattainable niche products that drove aspirations,a dreams, desires and magazine sales figures.
An outstanding example of the genre is EVO magazine from the UK...it was basically devoted to esoteric sportcars that I couldn’t afford to own, couldn’t afford to drive and probably didn’t/don’t have the capacity to get the most out of without binning it...and yet I still bought the magazine.
These days, people don’t seem to understand that just because they can’t afford it...it doesn’t mean that others can’t have it.

Oh, the vibe is clearly different recently — I assume the audience is more interest-diverse-and-divisive , given the jumble that is the G/O media empire now, and less “pure car fans”. I’m genuinely surprised at comments you see over there— those would have been shocking even 18 months ago, but now seem to be par for the course.

The Caterham 7 is my dream car. I can realistically afford 43-50k. Tiny and exposed, so it feels faster at low speeds. Exotic. Meets and likely exceeds my driving capabilities. Cheap on parts. Replaceable in the event of tragedy. Only thing that suffers is the ability to roadtrip. So who needs 400k for a Lambo?
Whoever styled the cars at lotus did an excellent job. The v8 Esprits are gorgeous.

IDK, I think part ofthe frustration is that Porsche putting less emphesis on the base models and more of rolling out all these higher end ones. there was a good post of someone graphing 911 cost vs inflation and another 911 vs average car cost. and over the 50 years it went from 1.75 to 3.1. And if you facotr in median 911 price over the last couple generations that number jumps up over 4:1.

Given the options available even on the base 911, it is really a build-your-car. I feel like that in itself is a lot of support. I mean, they have 10 versions of the base 911. 5 if you don't count the s models. Also, just realized, the carerra 4 cabriolet and the targa 4 are the exact same price.

I’d look for my comment in a browser I wasn’t using regularly. Initially I was permagreyed, then nothing. Word to the wise, don’t contradict a self-titled expert who has a finger on the button. They have very delicate egos hidden by bad facial hair.
