My sister purchased a brand new 2020 Chevrolet Suburban Premier RST something or other for a price higher than my first house purchase. Wowzer... Anyway is it being shipped from a fairly high COVID-19 area Arizona to an open up the economy possibly soon to be high Texas area .
The questions is what kind of disinfection can be done to the vehicle on top of what “Autonation” may attempt to do? I joked with her that she can quarantine it for 14 days but she did not laugh. She has 4 young children so she would like to give it a thorough cleaning but do I just recommend Lysol wipes? anything that shouldn’t be touched with certain chemicals? It is Cocoa/Ma ho ga ny Interior so lots of browns to possibly stain.

burn it

A more practical middle ground would be to
let it sit for 3-4 days as that’s the survival period on various tested surfaces
. 14 days is the incubation period in a living
host. A car provides no living
host cells for the virus, unless the leather is alive.

See, a sensible solution she wouldn’t even consider. Shame we share genes... that and getting ANOTHER GM product.

What chan said, let it sit a few days outside in the sun and you will be fine. The virus can only survive max a couple days on a handful of surfaces

So I can’t hold the irony in... She is worried it won’t be delivered in time for their trip to a vacation spot in Texas to float a river that is packed and camp at a campground that is sold out YET she is worried about what might be in the vehicle... basically she cant let it sit because she is about to take a roadtrip with it. But I agree, most likely safe just want to give her the suggestions.

As hot as it’s been in Phoenix? And, with car sitting in the sun?
By the time it gets over there it’s thoroughly auto-claved. Run a wipe across the wheel and armrests and door handles to Cargo Cult Science it... but after a few days on the transporter in that heat? Nothing lives.

With it being leather seats, etc... you’ve got more options for what you can use.
I use Gtechniq I2ab, it’s an anti bacterial all surface cleaner that contains Bio Cote to leave an anti bacterial coated surface.
But a general disinfectant, followed by a regular car interior cleaner (to remove any disinfectant residue) will do the job.
Generally if the vehicle is well ventilated for a couple of days and not been used for four days the risk of getting anything is almost nill.

And if you close up the windows, in Texas, in the sun the inside temp will be 130f+.

Interesting that even the experts are saying this is new territory and we aren’t sure if these material will take will to the recommended steps. Thanks for the links!

eh.... put a face mask on every vent?
tbh... i reckon a new car is pretty low risk...
certainly no higher a risk than the shopping carts that are considered safe after just a quick wipedown

That seems very counterproductive

blast it with a UV light, or roll down the windows . I’m no scientist but i’ve heard it can;t withstand uv light for long so that would probably help.

I should add that I’m jealous— every generation of Suburban has gotten more and more capable. And, nicer.
I’d love to replace one of my Quadrasteer Suburbans, but don’t see that happening any time soon.

So I had a big response typed up but then searched for the Gtechniq and somehow lost it in kinja so here is the short: Thanks for the suggestions!

Strange buy but okay
Just let it sit a few days, run the AC with the windows open on the driveway idunno... I don’t think the surfaces are particularly worrisome except maybe the steering wheel and door handles.
In the end, those dealers are as worried about Covid as anyone.

That plus add chloroquine to the cabin filter and she should be golden.

I tried to push her towards an Expedition Max at the very least but oh well.
I guess I should have explained a bit more about why the sit and wait doesn’t work for here so here is my response to another about that: So I can’t hold the irony in... She is worried it won’t be delivered in time for their trip to a vacation spot in Texas to float a river that is packed and camp at a campground that is sold out YET she is worried about what might be in the vehicle... basically she cant let it sit because she is about to take a roadtrip with it. Bake the bitch(car not your sister). Outside, windows up, heat on high for a couple hours and I don’t think any live organisms could survive

No worries. The risk is minimal if the car hasn’t been used for a while, it’s more peace of mind.
I mostly use the disinfectant stuff for cleaning cars who have had people with kids eating in them. Rotting crisps, sweets, etc... and spilled drinks can cause bacteria to thrive and mould to grow.
I always do full anti bac cleans on cars that have kids in them.

Let the truck sit until the roadtrip, maybe Lysol whipes on the steering wheel and remove remaining disinfectant with a paper whipe

The virus doesnt last on any surface for more than a few days days. S o anything you can’t disinfect will be fine soon.
