It’s home! More details later...1968 Mustang. It needs quite a bit of work, but this is a car I’m willing to do the work on. A running, driving V8 Mustang for $5600. Best of all, if was only about 3 miles away from me!

Kinja'd!!!

A more detailed post to come later!

Huh? Why even bother with a trailer?

Looks good in that picture! The price doesn’t sound exorbitant either. Now, I’m going to be that guy: are you going to change the rims t o something more period-correct (read: stock )?

What for the V8? 289? 428 CobraJet?

Yes. I dislike the wheels that are on it. The tires are also from 1991. I’m taking this one slow. The Cougar, I just started throwing parts on without a definite end goal other than, “hey, I’ll fix this...oh, now I’ll do this!”

I’ll have to snap a pic of my neighbor’s Mustang. Similar vintage but I don’t know how to tell them apart. It hasn’t moved in years, but looks good from 100' away.... who knows.

Tires are 30 years old and dry rotted. Also hasn’t been street driven in over 10 years. I preferred the piece of mind vs taking some guy’s word for it.

I was looking at stock steel style wheels, it is crazy how inexpensive Torq Thrusts are. They are on a crapton of these cars, though.

Hue shift that to blue, and that’s exactly what my buddy’s beloved ‘68 was.

Gotcha...probably a good call. I had the same conundrum and took the dumber route with getting my Corvette home from my parents house...the 40 year old tires (though surprisingly not dry rotted) tires made it the 12 miles to my house. Though I did take the back roads and stayed below 40mph.

If I see a car with torque thrusts, I automatically think less of the owners taste.

A good thorough inspection. Brakes bled, if not replaced, at a minimum. Steering is a little iffy. I’d drive it in the neighborhood right now, but that’s about it.

When he commented on the tires “look, they’ve held air since 1991”, i figured with my luck, they’d lose air rapidly today. Ha. I probably would’ve been fine, but my son wanted to come along for the adventure, too. I definitely wasn’t going to drive it with him in it.

Nope, my father in law has a “no sale to family” policy apparently. He sold his truck last weekend and didn’t even mention it to us until it was sold. Haha. The Mercedes is sweet, but he’s definitely going to want market value for it, which is above my budget.

I am getting 16x7's and putting 205/55 tires on them. The 14" with a low profile tire look ridiculous on the car. The 16's with a 205/55 tire actually match the OEM tire’s outside diameter, I think it was a 195/70 R 14.

No vinyl top on the Cougar. This should also have less expensive parts, especially when it comes to interior, body parts, and rear suspension/drivetrain.

When I got the Cougar, I was looking for a Mustang but couldn’t find one in my price range. This was actually cheaper than what I sold the Cougar by a good bit. This one will be a driver and I’ll leave the body, flaws and all, as is for a while, I think.

I was going to say the same thing, or mostly... and then mention I’m not reading a shit ton of comments to get up to speed...

Didn’t you just sell this type of car?

And

Well at least you know your way around this era of Ford...

but congrats on finding something you wanted.

My dads buddy got his dream car through CarMax. His grandson worked there and a 68 fastback got traded in, employees get dibs before regular customers. Picked it up for like $3,500 and then another $10-12,000 maybe for restoration and he has the car he wanted since 30-40 years ago.

(All the numbers above may be wrong, but‘68  mustang , grandson, carmax, dream car were not)

My first father/son project car with my dad was a ‘67 Mustang (although 6 cylinder and convertible). My wife’s first car was a ‘68 Mustang, so that together is a little special.

The Cougar was fun, but with the additional rust repair needed, it would have put the work cost well over what the car was worth. I knew it wasn’t my forever car, so I moved on. Not saying the Mustang is forever, but it’s a little better starting point than the Cougar was.

Two, three years I could very well be kicking this to the curb, too.
