1) If you’re going to drive somewhere, make sure you have enough gas.

2) If you don’t have enough gas, make sure you plan where you’re going to gas up.

3) If you’re going to stop at a gas station, make sure you can either pay at the pump or that the gas station is open.

4) Having 1/4 of a tank left and being within half an hour of option 3 is not an emergency.

5) If you can’t figure this out, stay home.

I hope this helps.

That sounds like one hell of a motorist assist call.

Thankfully it was just someone confused in a closed gas station lot. Helpful common sense was provided as politely as the situation allowed.

The history of technology is an arms race between engineers coming up with  more idiot proof solutions and the world coming up with better idiots.

You should’ve seen the look on this guy’s face when I told him you can use a debit card at some gas pumps to pay.

“But how?” he asked.

People amaze me.

I mean, beyond giving him instructions on how to pay at the pump, can you really tell him how it works?

On the other hand, I’d be super lost if I ever had to pay cash at a gas station. I don’t think I’ve ever done it.

Somewhere between 1 & 5 you could add another step -

Know how accurate your gas gauge is. My Fit goes from telling me there is 60km of range left to — (I’m guessing that is “Who the F@%%$ knows”) in about 20km sometimes. Wi th stoplights and such it is typically about 30-40km, but there have been a couple of times where it was a bit puckering.

I mean cruising on a freeway at a consistent speed should be a situation where it’s accurate, but alas and alack.

I’ve had my card denied while driving across country but I doubt that was the case here. This person should probably have called the Flathead County Sheriff so they could make our police blotter. Remember we get tons is Alberta residents day drinking in Whitefish.

I like that last sentence . My experience with confused people parked at gas stations almost inevitably leads to a DUI.

The difference between Japanese and German fuel gauges is STRIKING.

The Japanese understand people and give them a HUGE amount of grace (room for stupidity) in their gauges. The Germans: zis ees a gauge, und zero means ZERO!

I can walk you through it, but I’ve TWICE left my credit card at gas stations in remote areas that aren’t pay at the pump. I’m just so conditioned to leave once I’m done fueling (and easily distractible).
