Bad Obsessions Motorsport strip down and rebuild a Toyota E154F gearbox.
It’s an hour long but hey, it’s lockdown, what else are you going to do.
I’m just going to grab some chocolate biscuits and settle down for an hour.

I know what they are doing, but how, no idea.
I could never do something like this unless someone was coaching me every single step of the way.

i myself just don’t have anywhere near the skill or stamina to do it.

My skill level on cars is checking and filling the oil, checking and filling the coolant an d checking and filling the screenwash. Even changing bulbs on many new cars, the need to study the manual is high.

Nothing beats a recipe. If there’s a manual and you have the right tools, jobs like this are fairly straightforward. I’m sure you could do it!

Yeah maybe but you got cleaning them pretty much sorted.

I watched about half of that and I will return for what is left. It's fascinating but also kind of mind boggling how anyone could design, much less disassemble and reassemble, such a complicated thing.

Errr...you do realise that Svending is a thing that is done to cars and most of us are rubbish at it?

Fuuuuuu!!! I recognize that transmission. Most awkward thing ever! Super heavy and unwieldy They’re quite durable though.

Yeah, I can relate, but I just got done rebuilding my 46RE autotragic box for my truck and I only even considered it after finding a step by step video series on YouTube about it. An auto is a bit more complicated, especially the valve body, but it was a fun task. It’s still black magic, but it does make more sense on how it all works. I imagine a manual box would be similarly understood when disassembled and reassembled. That triple prop shaft rod detail is really cool.

And don’t underestimate the value of a good YouTube video.

Yeah, transmissions are pretty amazing. Lots and lots of pieces. But a good video can walk you through it all.

One of the most interesting take aways for me is the making of special tools to get the parts separated. Pretty ingenious use of parts and pieces to cobble together functional tools.

I know it’s, for me, hard to get my head around.
And that’s from an older car, t he current stuff, I don’t even want to think about.

Imagine tearing down a modern 10 speed automatic. I don’t even want to think about that.
I can still understand most of the terminology, which is more than 90% of people could say, so I’m like halfway there, right? Right?
** crickets**
Guys?

It sure has. I would have not even considered doing the rebuild on mine had it not been for the video series. I still remember going to the library to grab chilton books to work on my vehicles. I do not miss those days at all. Now you just type in the year, model and issue and you can dive into the rabbit hole to try and figure out how to effect a repair.

I was flummoxed more than once by a Chilton instruction, usually the ones that start with the assumption you either know how to do step one or recognize it’s out of your league and you should have a mechanic take care of it. I needed the book to give me instructions, not tell me to take it to a mechanic!

Lol, step 5, assembly is reverse of removal.... grrr.
