The state of Maryland !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (part of the University of Chicago) to hire 1000 people to do contact tracing over the phone, from home. NORC...hired my wife as one of these contact tracers. She starts training sometime next week. They’re not sure on the exact date just yet.

Anyone else heard of any other states getting their shit together for this next phase?

We have a program:

Kinja'd!!!

The info on their site ( https://www.mass.gov/lists/covid-19-contact-tracing-resources-and-information ) may be out of date, but what they describe is pretty underwhelming. This thing spreads too readily to worry about just the people you know you spent time with. At the very least, they need to be figuring out where you’ve been, and trying to deal with people there as well. Of course we probably don’t have the testing resources to do that either.

Well, that's good news for me working in Maryland when the finally ask us to go back into the office.

Exactly. This would have helped 5 months ago, when it was breaking in China and before it was pervasive here. Regrettably, it’s pervasive here.

At this point the strategies should be focused on those most at risk.

The need for contact tracing has not gone away. It is one of the most important parts of successfully mitigating the risk of infection when reopening the economy. The point of it is to notify anyone who may have been exposed that it happened and for them to self-quarantine if possible.

Be glad you don’t work at the department of education. Evil Aunt Bets y hates telework, according to my friend who works in IT there. A year or two ago she made all sorts of remote workers come into the office because she just doesn’t like remote work, and now she’s already trying to get people to come in to the office.

Im in a part of HHS. We had a close call back when that Georgetown preacher got diagnosed, and someone at work was at a party with someone from that church. Had to decontaminate two floors of the building. They sent us home and said don't come back. No part of my job can't be done from home, and our bosses understand what the hell this is about. We had been extended to June 1st at minimum, if be surprised if it's that early.

The s cience out here suggests it’s too late for the State of California and many counties are opening up based on those scientific recommendations, of which the Governor is fully supportive . LA County, mainly due to homelessness and infrastructure challenges, will be one of the last to re-open.

I like Hogan a lot and I’m sure he’s taking the decisions he believes are best for the state of Maryland .

The Stanford and USC research out here is buttressed by a lot of follow-up work suggesting pretty high antibody presence already and only limited benefit to contact- tracing given the widespread distribution of antibody positives.  So, I believe Cali will not implement a program.

Your link doesn’t mean what you think it means. Prevalence in the population does not mean it’s too late for contact tracing, and in fact the article says as much.

“Until you start to see a decline in the death rate, and the number in ICU comes down to a manageable level, you can’t think about relaxing social and physical distancing restrictions,” said Nash. “And when or if you do relax, you need to be ready to detect when things tick back up, so you can turn those strategies back on. You need the ability to do more testing and contact tracing. ”

You may be aware already that Apple and Google have been working on a contact tracing app. I’m case you weren’t, I grabbed a link. Just thought you might be interested.

I don’t honestly know if anyone in Texas has been considering a system or not.

Johns Hopkins and Coursera just announced a tracing class.

Started today if she wants to get a head start.

Yep, I’m aware. I guess we’ll see how it pans out. Since many states are pushing to reopen in some kind of way now, and the app’s not ready yet, there’s definitely a need for people to do tracing the old fashioned way. Even when the app is up and running there’s probably still going to be a need for those people.

Here in Maryland, the statewide stay at home order is expiring on Friday and going down to “safer at home recommendation,” because the overall statewide infection/hospitalization rates have trended down for 14 days. B ut the governor left it up to the counties/cities to decide if they want to do the same. For example Montgomery & Prince George’s counties that border DC are not yet seeing declining #s so they announced they ’re staying closed down indefinitely, and until June 1, respectively. Other places like Baltimore city have done similar.

Delaware is piggybacking on Maryland with the same NORC contract, supposedly hiring 200 tracers , plus 100 National Guardsmen.

Still feels like we’re running way behind, I mean, this was always a requirement for eventual reopening, but we seem to have just started talking about doing it now, after being closed for 2 months. Maybe they did start working on this 7 weeks ago, and just announced it now, I don’t know.

Hmm interesting. From reading the description , I think this training is targeted towards people who are trying to get contact tracing jobs so they can say they’ve completed the training when they apply. Since she already has the job, I’m fairly certain based on having been with her for almost 10 years now that she’ll say, “W hat do I need to do another training for when my job is about to train me? I want a foot rub.”

Newsom says we’re re-opening and his science team’s consensus says it’s too late for contact tracing . I guess everybody’s listening to different scientists..

The Mercury News Staff disagrees with the governor too, though, so “consensus” is hard to come by.

https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/05/14/editorial-newsom-2/

Good luck and stay healthy.

This link doesn’t say anything about Newsom’s thoughts on contact tracing. In all of my googling I can’t find a single reference to any comments that Gavin Newsom has made to the effect of it being too late for contact tracing.

This editorial does  say that California is in the process of training 20,000 workers to do contact tracing. The Mercury News seems to be disagreeing with his decision to move forward with reopening before that workforce is fully trained, and without more testing capacity, both of which are things Newsom said he would previously want to have in place before reopening.

University of Chicago, huh? You ever read Shock Doctrine? Never let a good crisis go to waste, indeed. Not sure how they’ll contact trace since the tests still suck. I wonder what the new “natural rate” of unemployment is. Money is people, friend!

I work for a private schools (Besty’s best friends) and they love this shit . Less overhead and a way for admins to say they can pay us less since you can’t teach eight hours in front of a screen. Now they’re all competing on who is the most Covid ready as a marketing tool. Problem is they have HR people pretending they know fuck all about public health because they watched a webinar (I hate to break it to these people, but your communications degree is bullshit, and no one thinks you actually learned anything in college).

You also can’t teach a a actual sciences classes online , since there’s no real way to do actual labs. This situation is a conservative’s wet dream as far as education is concerned.

On top of that, we’ve had to worry about students committing suicide, because we are the only positive human interaction they get in their lives.

I’m guessing your IT friend isn’t actually a teacher.

Sorry for the rant, last live class with my kids and I need to vent.
