It’s used to tension seatbelts during a crash. It’s powered by a cou ple of 9mm blanks and can only be used once. Read more about it at Hagerty .

if I had money to blow on dumb stuff I’d get myself one of these R/C aircraft wankels made by OS Engines.

Kinja'd!!!

Glow fuel has so much oil in it the apex seals in these would probably last forever :D

edit: and this guy put a clear cover on one.

I was looking at the picture thinking to myself “is that a bullet cartridge?”

And it was!

So many interesting things happening in that video! We were talking about L-head engines just a few days ago and he used one for his comparison. But the real elephant in the room is what happened to that guy’s finger? He’s also running the engine without a load. That’s not a good idea with a piston engine, but perhaps the rotary is fine. At least not having a prop will keep it from blowing oil all over the shop. Cleaning up oil, especially castor oil, after a flight was always a chore nobody wanted to do.

Anyway, I can’t wait to show the kids this video. There’s a couple of people running piston engines with plexiglass heads, but this is the first rotary I’ve seen. Neat!

He’s also running the engine without a load.

by the sloshing, the needle on the carb is obviously way, way rich so it’s probably running relatively cold.

That’s so cool. The thought never even crossed my mind that you could make a pretensioner this way. The modern p iston/ cylinder design just kinda seemed like a foregone conclusion.

I w onder how many times it would rotate when fired without the seat belt attached. I also wonder how much torque it has when fired. I know it’s just for taking up the slack, but I wonder if it has enough to pull the passenger back a bit. Probably not, but just imagine!

Well, for what it’s worth, I was taken aback just looking at it!
