The automatic transmission in a Ferrari 400 is a GM Turbo-Hydramatic. So...

If you ever find one in a salvage auction or whatever and it’s missing the engine, you could probably put something like a Chevy 350 V8 in it. Ferrari hot rod.

That is all.

You’d be shocked how many older cars used GM Turbo -Hydramatics.  Jaguars, Bentleys, Ferraris...

In that case, a 350 V8 swap would probably be the cheapest way to own a lot of those cars...

This would be a good idea if somehow the original engine grenaded. Probably need to fab some custom motor mounts and exhaust headers, though.

Yeah and you pretty much have to since those engines are apparently very expensive to restore or maintain, like quite a bit more than what the car is worth. I talk to a guy with another kind of Ferrari sometimes and he said that and that there are parts for this car that are impossible to find as well.

Absolutely.

The thing is, now you can start down the slippery slope of - well a 350 bolts to it, which is good. But i’m fairly sure the LS uses the same bellhousing bolt pattern - I think there’s one minor difference, like one bolt in the 350 is a centering stud in the LS, so you need to ream one of the holes in the bellhousing, but it’s something fairly trivial.

Of course the downside to the Turbo-Hydromatics is they are non-overdrive. But a 4L80, the 4 speed evolution of the TH400, isn’t much bigger. And a 6L90 is only slightly bigger besides...

So what I’m getting at is all these cars ends up with an LT-5 crate engine with a 10L90 behind it!

It’s not the same bell housing. Close, but a few bolts are different. There are a multitude of adapter plates though.

Funner fact:from the mid-80's to the mid aughts, pretty much every BMW had a GM automatic transmission at some point

Thanks. I thought they were basically interchangeable, but I must have misremembered or been thinking of something else.

The Mark VII and Continental were offered with BMW diesels for a few years in the mid ‘80s.

But wasn’t there a BMW diesel with a Volvo Motor for awhile? So confusing.

That's the beauty of the PRV one shitty design used by 6 companies all of whom can point the finger at someone else.

Well, some models in some markets did. Others used Aisin units ( I think for Japan) and of course the fwd models continue to do so.

Generally they use ZF though and have done ever since they started making two pedal cars.

Interestingly, the GM and ZF five speeders both tended to rid themselves of reverse, expensively so in the case of the ZF which wasn’t its maker’s finest hour.

I don’t remember the full story, but this guy had a 360 Modena, the motor blew, and he decided to swap in an LS with twin turbos pushing 1000HP.  It’s bonkers!!!

I bet it has a weird bell housing pattern. The one in the Jaguar XJS wasn't a standard 400. The 4T65E GM made for Volvo is externally different too.

And the turbo-hysramatic works well. It is incredible that the later computer controlled boxes sucked so bad.

El_Uly would know better, My second cousin has a 330 2+2 that needs a rebuild due to age, and multiple dealers and a couple high end garages were like “nope not touching it, we’d only crate it back to Italy.” The prices he was getting quoted 40- 50k 7 years ago.
