Milestone post! 180,000 miles on a Subaru STi. Oh god what have I done. Clearly I am done for and will subsequently now go broke. Better enjoy it while I can before some sort of danger to my manifold causes the engine to fall out! And before you say RIP headgaskets, those have been replaced. But I’m in uncharted territory, normally people blow up EJs by this point. That’s what the miata is for though, this car is staying stock and reliable.

If nothing else the turbo would probably appreciate a rebuild/ the exhaust housing is getting haggard from the heat cycles

My plan was to get to 200k with just oil changes and then start replacing a bunch of shit regardless of its broken. My flywheel is pretty haggard and it’s the oem clutch anyways, so I’d do that then. And certainly a new turbo and i ntercooler at that point as well . Until then I don’t really want to take things apart without any signs of issue. I should do my struts sooner and certainly change out gear oil everywhere ASAP.

Not to fear monger but my WRX engine went around 180k. My cam gears exploded so I’m not really sure how you would go about checking that. Maybe take the timing cover off and look for cracks?

180K is crazy! However, with staying up on maintenance and keeping things stock (nothing against modding but just saying), I feel like these types of cars can last much longer than people think. That’s the biggest motivation for me keeping my focus st stock, I have no reason to get rid of it right now and it does everything I want it to performance wise and functionality wise. No need for me to go blow it up with a crackle tune and big turbo.
I also love the trunk lip spoiler. I always thought the STI Limited’s were the best looking, but a regular STi with a trunk lip is about just as good I think.

Congrats @180k! These are super cool cars that always sound like they want to blow up. Have driven a couple and always a blast. I just like something quieter anymore

There’s something to be said for keeping things stock from a “everything is calibrated to work perfectly together” standpoint too.
Example: my tune is great but the traction controls shits itself in fear because of the constant loss of grip.

You can service turbos? I kinda thought they just went until they didn’t lol. I know some superchargers have changeable oil

Gonna be a little bit if the quarantine keeps up lol. I was at like 175 in January. Meanwhile I drove like 20k+ last year.

Funny because my only complaint about this car is that it's too quiet. And my reluctance to mod it is the only thing holding me back from changing that. I'm so used to my miata with no roof and aftermarket exhaust being rather noisy. So the Subie is my luxurious chamber of quiet. Have to really get on it to hear anything, or be in a parking garage. Not that boxers sound particularly great anyways, I want more turbo sound like a train whistle moreso than exhaust haha.

Well yeah little things are the worst sometimes too. Upgrading the radiator in my miata meant a higher pressure system. Subsequently broke coolant lines that never leak normally and were a pain in the ass to replace. Also broke my heater core. Things that sure have 250k on them so just a little bit of added stress is bound to break things. I cant even imagine doing real things like throwing a turbo in there and seeing what happens.

Ive driven one around the age of yours, and one only a few years old. These seem to attract modders like jeep fans towards the noisy and harsh. Ive been spoiled by the quiet fast of the GS
