Honda should make an E-bike styled to look like a Dream 50. It’s already pretty much the size of a bicycle. I’d ride the shit out of that.

I found a place that makes e conversions for classic Vespas and Lambrettas. https://www.retrospectivescooters.com/for-sale/project-e-electric-vespa-conversion

...But then it wouldn’t have all the cool-looking mechanical engine-y bits. Forget the whole discussion of whet he r electric or gas is more fun, a little gas engine looks more visually interesting than a battery box.

Or at least that’s my stupid opinion.

E -m oto/e- s cooter or e-b ike?

I wouldn’t think Honda would go e-b ike route. A lot of places in the coming years are going to start cracking down on the archaic rules of mopeds with regards to actual e- bicycles and current regulatory exploitation “e- bikes” . It’s already started here in BC: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/e-bike-users-sellers-dismayed-by-b-c-supreme-court-decision-1.5563450

But recently a B.C. Supreme Court judge upheld fines against a man in Surrey who was riding a Motorino XMr, which Miloshev markets as an e-bike, without a licence or insurance. The judge said the Motorino “does not comply with the intent of the legislation.”

Justice Robert W. Jenkins said the Motorino is not a motor-assiste d cycle because the pedals don’t propel the engine and the vehicle can operate without them.

The defendant in the case testified that he had never used the pedals on his e-bike, so he didn’t know if the engine [sic] would disengage when he stopped pedaling.

e -b ike e-m oped e-moto in question [ they don’t even show the pedals attached] : https://motorino.ca/motorino-xmr

Absolutely everything should be made to look like vintage motorcycles.

How about keep the engine sans internal parts, gut the gearbox, and put the electric motor inside? Also put the battery inside the tank.

Weird, but I guess that’s a compromise that would technically work. But then there would be a nagging voice in the back of my mind telling me the cool mechanical bits aren’t real...

Some of them are pretty ridiculous, they offer traditional motorcycle performance without needing any training, insurance, or safety gear. I think a lot of places are waaaay behind when it comes to regulating them, especially since they can be used on sidewalks/ bike paths, etc...

This guy is trying to make a kit to covert old mopeds to 35mph electrics.

At this point I honestly think that if it has a hand control accelerator and 2 wheels it should come under our low power motorcycle regs regardless (at least in BC). With proper pedal e-bicycles they probably need to either revise the power from 500W max down to like 300W or the speed cut to like 10mph and stop them completely screaming under power through the bicycle or pedestrian paths at 18mph which is leading to incidents and accidents that pisses everyone else off.

We’ll have to see what the law makers do. I don’t know if they’re planning on going to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. I think they’ll lo se there anyways. N ow that the top BC Court got wind of this loophole exploit and seeing that directly effects public safety, they’re going to take a good look and start revisions to change this .
