Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

So over the past few weeks there’s been a running gag about having a bee bro in my garage. He hung out on my laundry basket. I’d put him outside, day or two later, same spot, he’s back. So now this has happened 3 or 4 times. I check outside and he's out there where I put him so this is a new one. Then a day later another shows up on my mop. Well, they'd die if they didn't leave so I'd collect them to make sure I'm not going crazy. Well yesterday a new one showed up and this morning another! Who keeps saying candyman or wtf is going on?

Where are you? Assuming you’ve seen the news articles about Asian Giant Hornets being spotted in Washington.

They’re also known to absolutely murder existing bee colonies, and kill people if stung. There’s a lot of information being passed around out here to stop people from killing other bees that serve an important environmental purpose out of fear that they’re these hornets.

At least what you have clearly isn’t this nightmare creature.

They look like they could be carpenter bees. Do you have any little holes in the wood? You may have some squatters.

Carpenter bee. It likes the wood in that area. They will keep coming back and they might start burrowing into the wood. Look for sawdust. They dig their burrows deep into wood and it can be really damaging. Imagine a hole the diameter of that bee’ s body and several inches into a 2x4. Keep them away from structural wood.

Fun fact: male carpenter bees cannot sting. The females can sting but they have to be really pushed to do so. The males are also the ones that act more aggressive.

Almost certainly carpenter bees. In addition to holes, look for saw dust on the floor and sills then look around it. Carpenter bees suck.

maybe put out some water for them. Nothing deep.

A while back my wife and I were having dinner outside (pre Covid world) and a bee was harassing us. Kept going for a glass with flowers in it.

I tilted it so a bit of water was reachable. Bee drank and flew away all happy.

Here’ s an example of the damage they can cause. This is prime time carpenter bee nesting season.

Huh - I didn’t know that.  I need to go look at the deck over our patio then.  We’ve had a couple there the last two years.  Nice thing about them is that they don’t live in big hives, and as noted, they’re very passive.

Yup. They’re virtually all bark and no bite

Here’s a random picture I found from searching for images of their hive

A shame that they are known as Carpenter Bees, because I could use an estimate for laminate  flooring.
