Usually our trailer is delivered by a medium duty daycab (think Freightliner M2) since it’s barely coming forty miles but I guess the hauling company had none available so today we get a massive highway tractor instead.

Presumably the ferries aren’t so full these days, so lots of room for big trucks.

We have a weird setup here. The corporate drivers bring the trailer from the distribution center to the boat, then this local company brings yesterday’s empty trailer back over to the mainland. They swap trailers with the corporate driver and bring the full one back to our side.

chances are good that has a Detroit Series 60 underhood, So here’s how big the piston/rod is in that engine, next to a cylinder liner.

Also yeah, there's always room for trucks but there's so little activity that the freight-only boats have been moored up and any non-hazmat trucks are just coming over on the passenger ferries.

The best part if waking up is a Folgers can sized piston in your cup

I’ve always wanted to live on an island, but I’m too impatient to do ferries. How late do they run?

I know someone who could polish off the entire inline six in a day

In the summer? One departs every 45 minutes or so from 5:30am to 10:30pm. In the winter it’s about every hour and fifteen from 6am to 8:45 with a 9:30 on weekends. It's not sparse enough to be inconvenient but any sojourn to the mainland does take some planning and strict adherence to a timetable

No need for the big boi.  Heck, I could’ve delivered the trailer for you in my Transit.

That’s similar to what happens on the BC Ferries. Some trucks drive straight on the boat, but some drop their trailer in the yard, which is brought onto the boat by one of BC Ferries yard tractors, and picked up on the other end by another truck.

My lot at work is sized for straight trucks, or daycabs, but definitely not highway tractors with a full 53 footer. Whenever they do show up, they usually take a long time lining up to a dock, and we know they’re there because they come in first to make sure it’s the right place before spending 15mins docking. One day I hear something backing up that sounds beefier than a Hino 5 ton. I look out and this dude is backing in from the street, in a gorgeous long wheelbase Peterbilt with a big sleeper, and a 53 foot trailer. All the way across our neighbours yard from the street, into ours, and perfectly into a dock in one movement, I think it took a minute, it was amazing. I told him nice reversing and he just shrugged

Most of the time our trailer comes off the ferry (right across the street), swings through our parking lot, back out into the street, and backs straight into the loading dock. Someone comes down at 6am and puts cones in the parking spots with the blue dots to make the turn work.

Once or twice a week in the summer we get a full 53 footer, in which case the truck drives a mile up the street to the freight company’s yard, turns around, then comes back to pull into the ferry’s staging area and back straight across the most heavily trafficked road on the island.
