We all know speeding has gone up as traffic goes down due t o the reduced mobility caused by the shelter in place orders.
Police in the US have issued more, and more severe, speeding tickets. Meanwhile here, today I saw the traffic police carry out the “carrusel” method. That is, blocking all lanes of traffic in roads where dangerous speeding is typical and doing the speed limit . I’ve never seen a carrusel operation in the middle of the day; cops usually do it in the middle of the night. But today I was caught up in artificial traffic caused by a carrusel operation. It was pretty strange.

You have to wonder how effective it is. Especially given that they are designed to be the median speed or something like that, ensuring half of people would like to go just a little faster.

I can’t find any reference to either the “carrusel” or even the carousel method for traffic calming. I think the more common term would be “rolling roadblock.”
Do you have a reference for that tactic?

I drove in to the office on Monday and people were driving like complete idiots. I mean even more so than usual. I’m not surprised that cops have started to take unusual measures.

And they shuttered their stores
When they opened the doors
To cops that were bored
Once they ran out of crime

On Twitter they call it “operacion carrusel. ” I’ve posted about it before, I think Far scythe said the used to use it in the Netherlands but they stopped when a particularly stubburn person caused a crash

I think it does help when they do it specifically to reduce illegal racing... But in these circumstances I think they might just be flexing.

As effecient as having to deploy fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, and police to scrape up body parts after an accident?
6 of 1, half dozen of the other I’d bet.

100%.
The “giving people tickets for speeding/anything is a blatant money grab “ crowd has never had to give a death notification to a family because someone drove beyond their limits or wasn’t paying attention.

My impression of America is that, when the sign says 60 you do 75, and the cops will turn a blind eye.
So what speed are they doing in this case?

I must have missed your previous discussion.
Your link, w hen translated to English, calls it a carousel. This is a carousel:
I wonder how they ended up with that name.
W hen I googled it with t he original spelling , the links were to a TV show for kids.
Over here, several cars driving side-by-side is called a rolling roadblock.

It was either that or post a line of snowplows going down the freeway with a visible wall of salt being broadcast out the back.

Around Seattle lately I’ve noticed even worse distraction and dopeyness on surface streets (lack of signal use and illegal u-turns are at epidemic levels), while on the highway there is speeding. Of course in the metro area, “speeding” is going 10-15 over the arbitrarily set limit that is the same as it was in 1965.

Yes, we as a society should ban death. Driving will be banned in favor or walking and the government will ship a perfectly crafted diet of soylent to keep everybody in peak health since heart disease kills more then car accidents per year.

Most of the time people just make stuff up, but there is an actual science to it. 85th percentile I believe.

Yeah, I think there’s even some kind of “book”, but I suspect a lot of speed limit determination is based on politically connected NIMBY types, cities conned by “Vision Zero” nonsense, and maybe those with revenue shortfalls
in cahoots with insurance companies.

Yes, I seriously doubt most limits are the 85th percentile (essentially the highest speed the “safe majority” take on a road). Sometimes they are ticket fests and other times they just don’t make sense.
Perhaps more worrying is that people seem to either disregard them entirely or rigidly adhere to them. One smart workaround to this behavior was employed by my town recently. They made all the lanes in the town square substantially narrower so people would slow down and mind pedestrians. It actually works and I’ve seen way less people disregard lane discipline now and it added mo re sidewalk space.
As you can see, not just any numbskull on a phone can navigate these intersections without mowing down pedestrians. Narrow is actually good in this case.

Try to contact your local planners with how they set speed limits on specific sections of roads. You’ll be lucky to get an answer, and I’ll wager you won’t receive any specific methodology.
A town square is definitely an area that needs “traffic calming”, as the scaredy cats sometimes call it.

Speed limit in Mexico city is 3 0km/h unless otherwise posted, but most medium roads are at 50km/h while controlled access roads are at 80km/h. They do 70-80.

Th e 85th percentile method is nice in theory, but as long as there’s a posted speed limit , it’s going to skew the results. Because d uring the time th at road authorities are gathering data to calculate that 85th percentile, some drivers are going to continue driving the existing speed limit ( no matter how artificially low it’s been set) instead of “casting their vote” on what the speed limit should be . Not bec ause they actually agree with the chosen number, but because their law-abiding conscience won’t allow them to accelerate up to what we would consider a more reasonable speed.

30km/hr seems low for a general speed limit. We have 50km/hr in built up areas, otherwise 100km/hr.
