The Santa Cruz is expected to come in 2021 as a Ridgeline competitor . I might consider this- just to try something different. Hope it has a better engine than a 2.ot and hope they manage to price it right. End of the day it’s no Ridgeline so I expect less than outrageous resale value meaning it will be more afforable used.

No, but, not because its a Hyundai, I just don’t want a pickup. Except maybe an El Camino, or maybe one of those Red Bull MINI ute conversions that come up for sale once in a while.

No, because I have a boat/trailer combo that’s around 5k lbs, and I don’t want to tow something that’s at the vehicle’s limit. Also, with resale as high as it is on full size pickups, you’re probably looking at roughly the same amount of loss between the 2.
EDIT: I hope somebody does though. It looks cool.

No. I’m not convinced Hyundai is “there” yet. This is besides the point that this is a silly useless pickup

I won’t, but I would if I was in the market. If it will tow 3,500-4,000, that cover the majority of people that actually tow anything.
That’ll tow snowmobiles, motorcycles, a lot of boats........

I actually really like that front end. I am still waiting for Subaru to bring back the Baja as mid size truck.

Depends on towing, my boat is 3000 lbs dry I like to have a buffer of 1000lbs for gear water weight fuel etc.

Good looking vehicle. As a truck, the bed is a bit short ... c an it fit things like a motorcycle in there ?
I could see one day replacing my ol’ trusty GMC truck with that kind of real-life practical vehicle, rather than a fake contractor grade/tough looking/I need a ladder or a 5-steps foldable tailgate to reach the bed/pissing contest with the Joneses - truck.

Anything would look better than the current gen. I think they could have sold more previous gens than current gens this year on looks alone.

I wouldn’t rule it out completely, but it’d be fairly far down the list of trucks I’d buy.

The Ridgeline definitely should’ve been on my list to consider before I bought my Tacoma, but I didn’t give it a second thought, based on looks alone. Call me superficial, but design matters.

Although I probably wouldn’t buy one at this point in life , I can see why this is a good idea to bring to market. Not that the Ridgeline sells that well but this is the perfect for the person who does oc casional yard work and doesn’t need a lot of capability..and yet they’re in a F150.

Most likely not.
Not because I have anything against the idea of a Hyundai truck.
It’s mainly because I don’t have any need to buy any pickup truck from any brand.
Now having said that, if I ever did buy a pickup, it would be for a specific need/capability. And then whether I would consider a Hyundai would partly depend on whether it satisfied the given need.

I totally get it. There is something to be said against a truck that looks like a bloated Pilot but with none of the purity of purpose and that stupid fake “body on frame” looking rubber piece between the bed and cab.
I love how the previous generation Ridgeline looked. It did not care what a truck was supposed to look like and ended up pleasingly avant garde because of it. It was innovative and uncompromised (with its goal of being a compromise vehicle) with a balanced geometric design that stated its purpose for everyone to see. And it wasn’t ashamed of being unibody.

I’m on my third Hyundai (2003 Elantra was totaled in an accident, 2011 Elantra touring was traded toward the FieSTa, third is the Kona), all have been good, reliable, well put together cars that are an excellent value. But I need a real truck with a real bed and a tow rating greater than 6000lbs... So we have a 2.7ecoboost F150 king cab 4x4 with the payload and tow packages. We put 2000lbs in the bed four to six times a year, and have towed ~7000lbs over 15,000 miles.
I can see this competing well against the Ridgeline and Taco (arguably the Ranger and Colorado are more serious trucks) . Will probably be more comfortable than the Taco, cheaper than the Ridgeline, and have better tech. If they make the driveline actually able to tow a reasonable amount (at minimum 4000lbs to be competitive) it might be quite popular with the crowd who has a tiny camper, small boat, some PWCs, or a snowmobile trailer and believe they need a pickup for that reason. The bed, frankly looks too small to be useful, except maybe for suburban garden center runs. I think it’s ultimate success depends a lot on the driveline and marketing. At least the styling is pretty spiffy.

Looks to Unibody like the Ridgeline so no but I will give them that it already looks better than the Honda.
Honda has a point with the Ridgeline but missed the mark with the current gen. Everyone wants a pickup now but barely use it to its full potential. The ridgeline is all the truck you need but i t needs to look sporty and off road ready, its a Suburb toy truck. Not some Mini van with a bed.
The Santa Cruz is trying to fill that gap. Look at the Avalanche, the first real toy truck that actually took off. People loved them for the SUV with the bed and ruggedness. Yeah it had some gimmicky things like the fold down rear seats but was s o cool and unique. So the public responded well to the first gen selling 300k+ in its first 3 model years.
Yet n o one used those to their full potential, yes it was body on frame but actually do fairly poor offroading, approach/departure/break- over angles are terrible. And while towing was decent and an 8.1L v8 2500 was available your not going to get a goose neck in that bed.
Its the status of I have a truck that looks like a truck to do truck things but I will never do those things so I should have bought a Minivan. But no one wants to hear that.

I’d seriously think about it. I’ve been burnt by the domestic brands too many times and while I’d love a ridgeline I don’t want to pay that much for it.
While fit/ finish and reliability isn’t great for them, it’s better than the US companies. To be honest I’d probably buy one 2 years old for that awesome (for me) depreciation on a korean car... It sure beats paying essentially new for a japanese pickup (even though that’s what I’d rather have).

It’s the kind of truck I’d want if I were to get a truck. But if I need a truck it probably isn’t enough to get the job done.

Understand I’m not the market for these things, but to me assuming this is Ridgeline sized it still seems too big. I don’t care to have a truck as a daily vehicle. But something even smaller (say based on the CR-V instead of the Pilot) for weekend use and errands? That sounds pretty awesome.

I’m not a “truck guy” by any stretch. I have a Dodge Rampage, which is also an odd duckling. And I’ve found both gens of the Ridgeline pretty ugly. Not a big fan of the current (or last 4) gen GM’s either.

They should’ve stuck to a 2 door and longer bed. More like the original concept shown, but maybe with a longer bed or extension.

I don't like overdone designs, which rules out most of the current truck crop. 1st Gen Tundra with factory fender flares are great looking for example.

I think really aggressive front ends kill my love for a lot of truck designs. That, and really low front “bumpers”/air dams. I get they’re in place for fuel savings. But they negate useable ground clearance.
When I had my Wrangler 2 of the most useful things I ever did to it body-wise was replace the front bumper to a short, narrow, high clearance design, and change the fenders to a high clearance tube fender. My mileage went down, but I never again popped a fender loose or worried about clearing an obstacle. Other armour I added later took care of about anything else I could throw at it. Steel bumpers and fenders also came in handy for camping to stand on to hang tarps and such...

Yes, modern cars have fragile aero that kind of gets in the way. The air dam on my Cruze scrapes on everything but at least it has some excuse. Inexcusable on a soft roader and even worse on a true Jeep.
Just look at how simple the front of my dad’s Tundra is. It still manages to look classy with that subtle dark green. Nothing here you don’t need and plenty of ground clearance (TRD for the win!).

Don’t forget that even Ford has a recommended tow derate on their trucks based on altitude. Something like 3% per thousand. At my house even with a 4000 lb tow rating I would use it to tow my 3500 lb camp trailer. I think it will be 3000 to 3500 tops. People aren't going to use this to tow, it's going to be more about looks than utility.
