After suffering through the first few songs, I found that the album settles down and finds a comfortable groove at 11:05.

It does settle in after the first 2 tracks. It’s been a go-to when I need something in the background. There’s something raw to the playing/recording that I love. For instance, when the sax comes in behind the beat on the second track or how piano is saturated with room sounds and perhaps slightly out of tune . It adds character.

It does sound like they’re playing a session in an empty bar and someone just slapped down a reel-to-reel with a single microphone and hit record. I agree with you - playing in tune seems to be optional. They also seem to have slightly different notions of where the beat lies. The trumpet always seems a fraction behind the sax.
It does add character.

Damn, that’s unfortunate that the capture is so bad, those are some proper
old school
groovy tunes.

Much bigger fan of this and some of the other albums on this label .
