This one had the drain.....but it was not attached. Wasn’t even close to being on. Don’t know how or why but when I poured water onto the frame and didn’t see it come out the bottom I was thinking cool, drains clogged easy fix. Turns out it all just poured into the car again.

...when they fixed the oil pan leak, some mechanic thought it’s cool to put some huge amount extra gasket maker on the oil pan. When you put this amount gasket maker on that gasket they haven’t replaced, they forgot that the gasket maker is going both ways when they installed it. What happened is that the extra gasket maker was clogging the oil pump pick up tube and the check valve inside both cylinder head.

Converter lockup clutch slipping when it should be engaged, or disengaged. Whatever the circumstances of the failure, the clutch pretty much friction welded itself together. The heat from doing so caused the discoloration on the lockup side of the converter housing. I’d cut it open for pictures, but I have to send it back for warranty and a core.

...The original failure was someone reused the washer with compromised tabs and the tabs broke. This caused the retainer nut to loosen and the nut closest to the oil seal and bearing to jump threads.
Threads had been jumped and chased three times. Wheel was about to fall off this time. New axle being shipped this week...

The green film is magnetic viewing film. The wheel bearing has a magnetic ring that is read by the wheel speed sensor. The customer supplied bearing doesnt have the magnetic ring so the ABS light came on during the test drive.

Yamaha outboard motor has been driving me fucking nuts all day. When you unplug the stator it runs, otherwise it dies. Took all day to figure that out. Turns out this fuse, which is mechanically broken in a way that you can’t see in the clear window on top of it, feeds power to the computer, for some stupid reason, and if the fuse is broken, it gets over voltage and shuts down.

for a minute there I thought it was a diesel engine, since the emissions plumbing on those is legendary.

From the brake post :
“ But it was a good car, only 2 engine bay fires.”
That is a damn low bar.

that reminds me of my first job as a co-op, the chief engineer didn’t really like the contract guy they had for IT (this was in the ‘90s, so “IT” was basically babysitting a Netware file server.) My favorite thing he said: “That guy’s a dickass. A $50-an-hour dickass.”

I love pictures of that engine. It is the example image for “German Engineering.” Thought that BMW rat’s nest is a good one too.
At any rate, they make the silly timing chain setup in my Ranger look like no big deal in comparison.

Agreed on all counts. It makes me appreciate the compactness of an OHV engine, that’s for sure.
