My son is having his first experience driving a 10 ft U-Haul, a rite of passage, don’t you think? I made the first day a short one so he could get used to it. We visited the famous Cadillac Ranch, which Toby and I visited in September. This was my son’s first visit.
I wanted to visit Palo Duro Canyon, but it is reservation only because coronavirus says you can pack Home Depot, but not a state park. I was an idiot and booked my reservation for the wrong day.. So we went to Wildcat Bluff, which was pretty. It was pretty hot, which was hard on Toby. At home, when the summer heat hits I limit our hikes to early morning, and we head for the cooler altitudes on trails with plenty of shade and cool water. It was nice, though, and I am glad we did it.
When we went to check in at the hotel, music was playing in the parking garage but the door was chained shut. Apparently, Marriott had a system error and reserved us rooms at a closed Courtyard. The reservation hot line lady was apologetic and very nice, and got us rooms at a nearby Residence Inn. Toby had some dinner, and he is wiped out.
I hope you are well, and I hope we are not boring you with these travel posts.

No, not at all bored. I look forward to these. Ii have had about the most exciting day I’ve had in a while purely because of 20 seconds of hers flying over.
I had some similar adventures planned but they all fell apart, so glad to see someone actually out there living it.

Not bored at all, although I did briefly have hopes that Cadillac Ranch was something else entirely.
If I ever own a Comanche, I’l l be sure to name it Quanah.

I wonder if someone has ever chipped paint off of those cars and tried to make something from it. Someone has to have done it

We visited Cadillac Ranch back in 2018 on our way home from South Dakota. There was an epic thunderstorm the night before, and the area around the cars was floode d with fetid water . I found it to be a rather depressing place, and probably a Superfund site.

Believe it or not, Carhenge is a completely different thing. I’m not sure why we like half burying cars out here but gotta get those roadtrip stop tourist dollars somehow, I guess.

Not boring me! In fact, my mom and I took a trip through some of the same areas a few months before I went back to college. She had a great aunt and uncle living in the Amarillo area who we stayed with one night. After visiting the Cadillac Ranch, we went west to California, stopping at several national parks along the way. It’s been fun to see you tromping around the same terrain I did some 30 years ago.

Driving a U-haul is definitely a rite of passage, but it’s not like it used to be. I still have nightmares of that shitbox truck. They should have paid me to driv e that damn thing!

Yep that’s exactly what I was thinking of.

Look at the beefy frame on that ‘48 or ‘49. Even after decades in the elements, half buried, and often flooded, I bet you could sandblast it and have a good as new chassis.

If it makes you feel any better, I think the “reservation only” system of entry at the state parks is to try and limit the interaction with the folks at the gates - so they don’t have to take cards or cash or anything from the people coming in. At least that’s what they told me a few weeks ago.
