I thought it was gone, but I stumbled across it when cleaning. What is it?

I managed to get out the part that snapped and now I understand why it broke (besides my bumping into it): the threaded portion is pretty small in comparison to the diameter of that shaft. There’sa lot of tension in that center post, so no easy way to reattach it.  I guess I’ll have to buy another whole assembly instead of repairing this one. Chances are that this unit would sell for more if it was intact rather than having the next owner replace that part, just like selling a used car - fix it before the sale and get a higher return.

Looks like a Pioneer RT-707? I love mine, such a great deck. I’m impressed those hubs broke!

Your guess is 100% correct. I got it for $5 at a thrift store. I don’t know how I broke it, but I know it was in the car for quite some time before I moved it into the house, and I probably smacked into it with something whilst it was in the car.

I’d imagine it’s been smacked more than a few times throughout history as well.

I raise you my glorious Sony TC-854-4. A friend of my Dad’s gave me this beast many years ago (c.1995). I had the heads reconditioned about 15 years ago and it still works - I was even using it to dub some old tapes recently.

Unfortunately I was using a hand truck to move it once and it fell over on its face. Incredibly the only damage was to the plastic reel lock on the supply side which shattered. I’ve found a binder clip makes an OK work around . Wonder if there’s anywhere one could get a replacement. Looks very similar to your hub.
