Budgie is a fairly obscure band outside the UK, though they toured along the likes of Priest and Sabbath in the early days. A little too heavy to get notice as a prog rock band, a little too prog to take off like some of their peers, and between minimal production/promotion support and the polarizing nature of Burke Shelley’s voice, they stayed niche.

They were one of Metallica’s favorite bands, though. Metallica have covered two of their better known songs.

I heard of Budgie once, 40 years ago. My high school girlfriend’s girlfriend’s boyfriend listened to them. Funny that the name of that band could be resident in my memory from so long ago.

They’re something of a musician’s band. Never really made it that big, but certainly an odd enough name to remember. Welsh band , in case you’re wondering.
